• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Questions about CBT therapy

Hi,

Has anyone went to an intensive inpatient therapy program for OCD? If so, did it help or not? If it did, did it help a lot or a little?

Also, for those who work full time, have you been able to find any therapists that treat OCD who will accept patients on a Saturday? Or evening hours during the week?

Has anyone here who has scrupulosity been in a CBT therapy session(s) and been pushed by the therapist to do exposure exercises? If so what were they? Did anyone ask you to deliberately blaspheme the Holy Spirit or anything similar?

Thanks for your responses.

God bless.

I've never had ERP. But, my therapist comes to the house every week and we have talk therapy. She mainly tries to get me to go out on my own and not stay in all day. I was surprised at how well I was getting. Also CBT can help other's and other's it does not. But I would give it a try. Saturdays there usaully at home and not working. I would suggest you talk to your pdoc about maybe a Benzo when really needed and if your not taking med's maybe get on one to help you think staighter.

Hi Flower,
My therapist actually had me trying to logically reassure myself through "talk therapy" and that really made me so much worse.
I don't think you need to purposely say a blasphemous phrase outloud in order to do exposure. You do have to accept it's presence in your head though and make space for it to be there without attending to it. The exposure that you could do would be to expose yourself to feared outcome that the OCD threatens you with because you have or had a blasphemous thought. This is really the root of it anyhow. The fear of eternal seperation from God. I did exposure to that fear... not fun, but it worked to stop me from trying to fight the fears. This would be no different than if you had a health obsession. The exposure exercise for that would be to try and imagine that you really did have that illness. You'd try to visualize what that would be like in as much detail as possible and then take it all the way to..."and then I die a horrible and excruciating death!" This can be done by writing out a story and then reading it back to yourself or tape recording it and listening to it. It would start out with...."because I have this blasphemous thought about God... I'll end up...." You'd have to take it from there. That's how I did my exposure to my religous OCD.
Praying for you.
