  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

1 Peter 3:18-19 and 1 Peter 4:6 seem to imply and in fact directly do say that Jesus went and preached to the Spirits of the dead while he was overcoming death (3 days) in the tomb. Does that mean that those spirits had a chance to repent even though they were dead?

1 Peter 3: 13-22 (ESV)

13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.
18For Christ also sufferedb once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19in whichc he went and proclaimedd to the spirits in prison, 20becausee they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

1 Peter 4:1-6 (ESV)

1Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh,a arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. 3For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; 5but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

Though the physical was dead the spirits of the people were not,,,they were in Lazarus's side of Sheol (not the Rich Mans)....these are souls that physically passed before Messiah (God's promised Redeemer) came but had faith in God and were eagerly waiting the fulfillment of that promise....

Salvation was always by grace through faith in the Lord's promised Redeemer...

The Lord would provide Himself a Lamb for the offering....all who placed their trust in the Lord's redemption are saved through His blood....

Thus are saved through Christ, Son of the living God, the Lamb God provided

To the thief on the cross Jesus said, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." Lk 23:43 Speaking of the resurrection of Christ Peter said, "concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades" Acts 2:31

Therefore when Jesus died he went to Hades and he went to Paradise. At the time Paradise was in Hades. Jesus made this clear in his story of Lazarus and the rich man of Luke 16 in which Hades is described as a place of hell fire and paradise separated by a chasm. So I think what happened was that when Jesus died he went to the paradise side of Hades and from there preached. Among those he preached to were those rebellious spirits - maybe in the chasm itself, and across the chasm to those in hell fire.

This is not to say that such could be saved. For the rich man in Luke 16 had a conversation with an angel, and yet he could not be saved.
