  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I understand why some people like collecting dolls but I am unsure of how I feel about this doll.

pdtl-319617001

Description of doll from site:

To enhance the look of a real little girl, this vinyl doll wears cross-stitch embroidered denim overalls over a pink blouse with lace trim. She even has tiny flower earrings with sparkling pink stones! Such a pretty girl!
Best of all, Hannah is constructed and weighted so you can pose her almost any way you can think of!

I feel concerned about the type of 'people' this doll would appeal to?

Yeah, that would freak me out if it were sitting on one of my living room chairs. I'd have to keep checking to make sure it's not staring at me.

You mean like perverts or something? I guess I'd never thought of that. I just can't get by the fact that the doll is so huge. Too many creepy movies with those kinds of dolls.
The doll is dressed more like a toddler than an 8 year old.

Maybe it's for when your own children grow up you can 'recreate' them so you can still feel all mushy.......

 Not my thing at all.

I think this one is worse though. quote:

"Ashley is handcrafted of Ashton-Drake's soft RealTouch™ vinyl skin, with hand-applied hair and hand-painted fingernails and toenails. Her delicate newborn features are so realistic - be prepared for lots of "oohs" and "ahhs" wherever you show her off! Her body is loosely jointed, too, so she feels just like a real newborn infant in your arms. Truly, her every breath is a special little blessing!"

I can't stand dolls like those ya'll have mentioned...

Unfortunately, in my former area -- they're really popular with the elderly. I guess because they go through the second-childhood thing but also combined by the fact the grandkids don't visit like they should. :sigh:

It gets creepy when you think about having to go through a home filled with dolls like these in different rooms because someone was that lonely..

I edited out my comment about my own daughter. I'm sorry, that came off insulting.

You are right about the elderly sector of society. My husband's grandma had a few dolls in her house. While I honestly don't think she was lonely for company (she had lots of friends and relatives), I know that she really liked children. I think she missed the days when her own daughters were young. So while the little "Packer cheerleader" doll didn't take her daughters' place she did add an air of youthfullness to the house.

Ok, so I thought this was for kids and I didn't see what all the negative comments were about because I was thinking that my 3yo would probably get a kick out of dressing her up in her own clothes. Now I see that this is for adults to have around like it's their child or something and I'm all skeeved out!

There was a program about these dolls on tv recently. It was very disturbing.

One lady got one made to look exactly like her grandson. Her daughter got very ill (cancer I think) not long after the boy was born and she ended looking after the boy during the first years of his life. A while after the daughter recovered she moved with the boy to Australia. This destroyed the grandmother so she got a doll maker to make a doll to look exactly like the boy when he was a baby.

Another lady got one to get attention. She was single and had no children and wanted the attention that mothers get. She actually put it in a pram and took it around the shops with her.

I think those women needed help desperately. They were obviously very lonely people.

The dolls, or “reborns”, are made by Jaime Eaton, a sunny young mother of four who said that after four Caesareans, this would be the “closest” she would get to having more children. “I’ve cried when I’ve let a few of them go,” she admitted. We watched her put a baking tray of rubber baby parts in the oven. You could have anything you liked, she said, a wriggling baby, one with raised capillaries, birthmarks. Her own children bashed each other with sundry infant body parts and seemed unperturbed at sharing their home with these grotesques.

One lady, Sue, had quite a few reborns in a spookily beautifully kitted-out nursery. She couldn’t do with the noise of the real thing: “I want them well behaved and clean and the reality isn’t like that,” she said. She took her “children” for walks and even had a bottleholder for their formula (fabric conditioner, not milk). She spent nearly £300 on clothes for a new baby, Sophie, who she travelled to America to pick up. (I know, mouth still open.) But Sophie had a crack in her head – she wasn’t perfect. Sue sent her back. (Mouth still open, eyes now swivelling.)

Quite an interesting read.
