  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

do writers have potential and a gift in only certain styles of writing? or does a real writer have potential and is gifted with every type of writing? like for example i notice when i try to write something particular on certain subjects or random things, i cant write a word...but when i write in an area i am familiar with and good at, i am in a zone... like i am not good at poems and songs or short stories etc. only what i am knowledgeable and keen at..i also think if i had a better vocabulary and could define certain words, i am not good with words at all...my vocabulary is bad... i would be better at writing, i don't consider myself a writer but i just love to write, its like in my blood...and i feel passionate when i write

Hi, Jennifer Diana :) God bless you :)

First, I would not be too concerned about if you can be labeled gifted or not. But write what is good, for God and for sharing with people or just to do yourself good, somehow. Write the good things which God's love has written in your heart, but know how He does write deeper than those words :) Enjoy sharing with God in how you write, and enjoy writing what is loving other people.

I understand that a gifted person can simply do whatever the person is gifted to do. If it is poetry only, that is gifted at poetry. Or, writing songs, which can be different than poetry. Or, a gifted news writer. But others might have a variety of abilities, but not necessarily all.

One thing I find is if I try to write in certain styles, I can get tied up with wording and structure, instead of being prayerful to share what simply is good.

Most of all, write what is loving God and people and yourself, and enjoy this :)

There are certain things which I could never have gotten myself to think up and write. They have come and I have put them down, and that was that. But that style I would not try to copy-cat, but use again only if I sensed and found that God had me to do so . . . or else, Jennifer Dianne . . . I might write something which seems impressive, but I don't get the love and grace and goodness in it which I can have when I am doing things to love and bless other people.

So . . . a rule for myself, in any case > do not write only in order to impress people.

"Let all that you do be done with love." (1 Corinthians 16:14)

you see i want to write a book but i feel like i dont have the abilities to do it..
Hi :)

I would say, first simply write what you really desire to share for God and to love people and record what does you good. Maybe write down things you need to read again and again.

And you will grow as a Christian; then you will be able to write more mature and blessing things. But even if you are a younger saint, it can help others if you write down what is really doing you good now. And this might help other younger Jesus people, plus encourage more mature Christians because they appreciate seeing how you are doing as a younger Christian.

And let what you write become whatever it will, that God pleases. It might always be a private journal, or there can be what you share in e-mails and blogs. And if it turns into a magazine article, fine, or a book . . . it might add up to a book. But I would say make sure you write what is good, and do not get distracted by its style or how much attention you get.

In case you find that my writing is of God > ones have told me to do a book. But I give "freely" > Matthew 10:8. So, my writing is on the Net in forums. I might have enough to fill a couple thousand book pages, by now, but where anyone is welcome to read it and share it.

I would love to write a horror book, but erotic romance is my forte. Like anything, read well-written stuff and see how it is done and emulate it. Vocab you can learn. Your writing style is your own.

There is a difference between skills and talent. Skill is something you can learn, practice, and improve. Talent is something that comes natural, but can still require some skill development to round out the edges and make improvements.

You can be a writer of any kind if you are able to put in what it takes to develop the skill. You have to allow it be something that you develop over time. The best way to develop is to try. Keep doing it until you get it right.

There is always room for improvement. The trick is having a teachable spirit and an open mind toward correction.

Btw, if you write anything at all, then you are a writer. It doesn't matter if you are published yet, or even have that goal. You are still putting words out there. The more you do that, the more you will improve your skills.

A tip for vocabulary is to subscribe to Dictionary.com word of the day. They will send you a daily email with a word and it's definition. I read them, and if it is something I want to start using, then I make a note of it, including how or when I think it can be used. It's not a stressful or high pressure thing, but daily I am seeing words that I either didn't know, or had forgotten a part or the whole meaning, or maybe even I was using incorrectly because it didn't mean what I thought it meant.

Another vocabulary trick is to go to Thesaurus.com. When you want to use a different word, but you don't know one, just type it in, and it will give you a list of words that can work.

I think that you express yourself very well. If I were you, I would write what you want for you book, then find someone who could read it and give you their feedback. Maybe someone could proof read it or co-author it with you to help in areas that might be trouble spots.

Every author gets their stuff edited, unless they publish independently and choose to do their own editing. You can pay a freelance proof reader, editor, and beta reader. Or you might have a friend or relative who might be willing to do it as a favor or to swap favors.

The author's main goal is not to write flawlessly, but to create good, quality content for the genre and purpose of their writing. Editing is another phase that is often someone else's responsibility.
