  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Its a figurative thing. You recognize that your flesh is what drives you to sin and you symbolically destroy it with the power of the Holy Spirit. Its the same as "dying to self" or "killing your old nature" or any of the other euphemisms for committing to live for something other than your own sinful desires.

How do you do it? Let me know if you figure it out. :)

You do it by the renewing of your mind.

You do it by making the Lord Jesus the center of your life, your best Friend, and know Him as laying down His life on the Cross for your sin. If one appreciates that gift of God and receives the Lord Jesus, is thankful to Him, and devoted to Him, that one will not be thinking of pleasing the flesh (natural man), but walking with God.

Yeah it's not a one and done kinda deal !!!

To listen to some folks they have killed the flesh indefinitely !

Paul does say, "I am crucified with Christ" so many take that to mean something more than it can possibly suggest. In another verse Paul says he "dies daily". The battle goes on until we cease to breathe.

What does it mean to crucify the flesh? And how do you do it?

I did it today regarding 'over-indulgence in food', and I'll have the same call--to do it tomorrow.

I live on very few foods, which is 'prudent' and my 'flesh' (palate, habit, memories, looking at others for comparison...) pushes me to act against prudence/reality/truth/Spirit, and today I resisted:

I prayed the Jesus Prayer; I read from The Philokalia; from the Bible; from John Climacus' Ladder of Divine Ascent, and I committed, prayerfully, to obeying the Spirit, and not the flesh...

It was hard at points, more so at certain points than others...

And that is one vice, over-indulgence.

It helps to know 'why', and remind myself 'what prudence' means, what it is tied to--Classical Christian definition, not utilitarian 'security-minded' definiton, which is modern.

So 'crucifying the flesh' is dying to it and being alive to the Spirit.

If i didn't focus on Daily Devotion, I wouldn't have been able to do it, today. And if I don't make the same commitment through tonight and into tomorrow, I will 'live in the flesh' and it's appetites and be dead in Spirit.

I pray, over and over, throughout the day, to live for God, in God, UP to God.

Today, it's been a God-centered day--temptations, yes; giving in to them, no.

I's tied to having the fear of the Lord. This fear of the Lord is holding Yahweh in such high regard and awe that we set aside what others think as well as what we think and let what Yahweh thinks be the priority in our lives. His Word lets us know what He thinks and we're to renew our minds (Rom 12:2) with Scripture. Our behavior is based on our thought life and reflects our hearts. This fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge (Deu 8:6; Jos 24:14; II Kings 17:28; II Chron 19:9; Job 28:28; Psa 33:8; 111:10; Pro 1:7; 2:5; 9:10; 22:4).

It seems so simple and it's decisions that we, as believers, make everyday such as do I stick with my opinion or do I follow Scripture? Loving Yahweh? Loving others? Forgiving? etc.

If you have ever been on a diet, you have experienced part of what it means to "crucify the flesh." Part of it is to refuse self-gratification when it is inappropriate.

Part of it is also the focus of our thoughts. It means thinking about spiritual issues.

What does it mean to crucify the flesh? And how do you do it?

Example:
I'm a chocoholic and weigh 260 lbs. I look at a chocolate bar and refuse to touch it, not just once but continually, relying on the Holy Spirit, and I have crucified THAT part of my flesh.
