• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In the name of political correctness:

Why don't we impose a uniform ban at OBOB and TAW that neither side will mention any other churches in any of their posts, including moderators?

Let's just talk about holiness. It will be rather drab, but then we won't inflame anyone.

And while we are at it.

Why don't we delete any threads/posts that are offensive in TAW and OBOB - especially the last thread that was moved from OBOB to TAW a few days ago and then promptly closed?

Deletion of threads is not the answer to a sharp tongue. Repentence and disipline is. Forgive me for not deleting everything that might be taken the wrong way or that was said in passion, but I believe in accountabily and responsibility for ones actions. I also came here from a board where censorship and tyrany guided the staff, and airbrushing things that are distasteful (or embarassing) to some is too reminiscent of those days for me.

"He that is offended must forgive the offender, so that he himself may be forgiven by God and that he may pray with hope, 'Father...forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors...For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses' (Mt 6:12, 14-15), says the Lord.

You see, Christian how terrible it is not to forgive your neighbor's trespasses! If you forgive a man his trespasses, then God will also forgive you. If you do not forgive, then God will also not forgive you. How, then do you stand before God? And how much, then, is your prayer worth? Almost nothing. When you become angry with your neighbor, you yourself will also be found in wrath before God. But this great calamity of yours comes from you yourself, since you are angry and will not forgive your neighbor his transgressions.

True, he has sinned against you, but you have sinned and yet still sin against God. He is your debtor, but you are God's debtor."

~St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, Journey to Heaven

I understand, Elizabeth, where you're coming from....and I also see Chris' point. I think he does a good job. Offensive posts are an opportunity to turn the other cheek.

Well said Oblio. I do not think that this is the cure to these problems. There have only been one or two threads on these forums that demonstratted such grotesque and unloving rhetoric that I felt they should be trashed.

Another question:

post limitation

Maybe it would be good for Erwin if people were limited to 4 or not more than 10 posts per day. Perhaps this would discourage trolls.

I mention this because His Grace Bishop Tikhon has a new Yahoo discussion group with a four posts per person per day allowance.

I too am distressed by the friction between the catholic and orthodox posters here lately.

That said I do not believe that this is in fact all negative, indeed I believe that it is important that those outside of Orthodoxy be able to recognise that Orthodoxy is not simply a slightly different flavour of Catholicism without a pope. This of course requires that we stand up and clearly state what our differences with Catholicism are.

Of course our position ought to be stated firmly and with love, but our position nevertheless does need to stated, particularly where we differ. Those looking for the ancient church must be allowed to find her and we do not assist them if we allow ourselves to hide from awkward conversations. We ought not to shy away from these conversations but we also ought to have the discipline to contribute to them in a manner pleasing to our Lord and not allow base emotions to rule the day.

The reason His Grace provided that is probably for practical reasons.

A lot of people subscribe to mailing lists with "loose mail" delivery. It has its advantages--you can keep e-mails you like and zap the ones you don't, whereas with a digest you either have to copy the things you like, or keep the entire digest that the post came in. Not wise.

However, with loose mail, if everyone is posting on top of each other and there's no limit on how much they can post, it clogs up inboxes VERY FAST and causes a lot of bounced mail, which in turn clogs up the mailing list with bounced-mail notifications.

I was on a list like that once, and it about killed me. I loved the list, but I couldn't leave my computer for longer than a couple days because the mail would clog my inbox and prevent me from getting any other mail, a lot of which was very important for me to get. I switched to "Digest", which helped, and gave me more "allowance time" in which I could leave my computer, but when that mailing list petered out and died, though I missed the fellowship and friends, I was glad to no longer have to rearrange my life around my e-mail!

On message boards, however, this isn't a problem. You can usually choose whether or not you have e-mail notification, etc.

I use the digest format because I can quickly scan the messages and save those that are really important. I'm saving a lot of the posts from normalorthodox because they are written by priests and bishops who have studied theology and don't get involved in stupid arguments over nothing. I don't have time to read through nonsense - not with 6 units in the summer session.
