  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just a discussional based question: Can you be a christian but go on and get drunk occassionally but feel bad and ask for forgiveness and then go and make love to one of your friends and not be married to her (more like a one night stand) and still be a christian?

How can you? Christanity is based on keeping morals and those godly views. If you forsake those, dont you forsake your religion?

I would say not in God's Eyes, because he sees everything and he knows your heart. If you are getting drunk and committing adultry, you don't love God. Because the Bible says, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. So by your worldly standards and what you want people to see about you, you can pose as a Christian but to God's standards you are not doing what he asks of you.

Christian means that you believe Christ is your savior.

When you do believe this, it means to want to become more like Christ. Christians do this to varying degrees, but every Christian is a Christian by the definition I gave you. In general, with Christianity, you should be trying to become a better person. That is of course the point of most religions, to become better. I would say that you ought to look at your lifestyle and decide what you want to improve on. Drunkenness and sex are stigmafied sins. Not giving to the poor and overeating is more socially accepted than getting drunk and having sex, but these are also bad things.

Whatever you do, I encourage you to create compassion for yourself and others in your life. This is what Jesus wants you to do. If you are trying to get Christianity to accept sins, it won't work, but if you want to be accepted by Christ, it will. Nobody is perfect, but everyone can be saved.

So the short answer to your question is yes, with the important caveat that believing means believing with your whole body, mind, life, and actions.

Yes. But I ejoy drinking, I enjoy getting drunk. I enjoy a night out on the town smoking, swearing and making out with random girls then going home and doing one of them. I enjoy that. But I know its wrong. But I like it so much...

Yes and no, brother

Yes, you are a Christian and know G-d, but no these practices are not Ok.
Yes. But I enjoy drinking, I enjoy getting drunk.
I believe you, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying something, but I have a sneaking suspicion you don’t enjoy drinking & getting drunk, only aspects about them. You’ve said your self these things are a source of guilt. When something gives us a sense of guilt there has to be an element of it we’re not enjoying. I guarantee if you look at why and try new alternatives, eventually you can have pure experiences and take the enjoyment your get from drinking and getting drunk right now and magnify it times a hundred.

In other words, understanding that enjoyment can’t be 100% explained, why do you enjoy these things? What do these substances and states enhance or create?
I enjoy a night out on the town smoking, swearing and making out with random girls then going home and doing one of them. I enjoy that.
Ok, just four questions though:
When you say “smoking, swearing and making out” are these the main events or just side things that seem to go along with other activities?

Is it you main goal with women to get them into bed?

You called them both your friends, and random girls which is it, or is it both?

Is that when you feel best with a women(when you get to sleep with her for just one night?
But I know its wrong.
Well, granted but lets not throw the baby out with the bath water :)

But I like it so much...
Now we just got to figure out why, cause then we can get rid of the guilt elements, so you can just have the enjoyment and be right with G-d! It not quite as easy as just finding out it ok, but like anything else it not too much work either, you’ve just got to be asking the right questions and keep trying :)

How can you? Christanity is based on keeping morals and those godly views.
Yes, but have you ever ask why?
G-d tells us it is because: we should “ be holy, for I AM holy”
G-d understands that we will struggle at time, but challenges us to wrestle with him.

Christianity is about enhancing and empowering your life! Don’t get discourage and loss sight of that. Don’t start thinking just because some of the current activities you do are unchristian, that Christian can not help shape those activities to be better.

If you forsake those, dont you forsake your religion?
The fact that your asking this proves you haven’t yet forsake it!
To forsake you must reject!

Ahh the sweet joys of youth :D

I applaud you're honesty and having been there and done that myself and I can see the appeal, not sure how conducive that kind of behaviour is with trying to be a Christian, but I'm sure many here will offer some more constructive advice than me..

Taking the girls home and "doing them" :D I guess that's one way of putting it.....

I was once a person of love and sex only. I personally believe that sex is a sacred bond. Very sacred and private. The most emotional openess you can ever have with a person. I have always been careful with whom I slept with. Keep in mind, in this modern world, if your a virgin at 21 your considered a freak. Or more of a loser. But I wait and met the girl of my dreams, Jessica. Beautiful woman, we spent a year and a half together. AS best friend and boyfriend and girlfriend. Had a lot of plans, then we broke up. So I guess I've been on the rebound a bit. But I'm just so confused as to how I lost valueing sex. The girl I just slept with the other night Ive known for a while. But how did I get here and why?I dont aim to "do" girls when I meet them at a bar. I aim to have fun and maybe see if they wanna hang out. I'm in it for relationships not the sex. But the other night it came so easy to me. Maybe my self esteem needed it. I dont know. I'm not as into drinking as i once was. But yes I do enjoy getting drunk. Smoking is starting to wear on me a bit. But I am starting to regret to have made love to that girl lastnight. But I do believe ins aving yuorself, but my ex we didnt have sex till very veyr late in our relationship. A month before we broke up (it wasnt cause of the sex - other issues) but I loved the closeness. And although I know out of wedlock sex is bad, I cherish losing my virginity to such a perfect person.

I came to my faith late in life. So, in a way the desire to get hammered and have casual sex with someone not my wife, wasn't high on my list of priorities. Were just people. It's important to avoid situations that will lead to temptation. The guilt you feel is likely a result of your faith. What would Jesus say to a repentant sinner? He'd say,go and sin no more.

unboundword, Christianity is about Grace and the fact that no matter how hard one tries, he will never be "good enough".

That being said, Paul summarizes

RO 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Once you are fully commited, the things of this world that seem desirable become less desirable as you seek His will.

If we were perfect Christians, we wouldn't need the acts of the Holy Spirit working in our lives.

excellent point man.
People don't act accordingly to what they claim to believe... although I don't concede that what you mentioned are sins. Regardless, when someone intentionally acts against Jesus's teachings then they don't truly believe in him and their claim of faith is merely lip service.

I can remember (with a slightly different issue) the conflict of believing one thing and practicing another. It tears you up inside... you must live constantly in guilt. Figure out what you believe and live according to those principles.

I believe that sex is truly an emotional bond that you are essentially "ruining" by having sex with random people. When you do find a woman you love enough to marry you have cheapened the connection of sex. People who do it long enough claim "its not a connection, its just sex." I would stop sooner rather than later, apart from the Bible I really believe this is the case.

God's work is not done in you. Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect. In fact it often makes your slip ups more glaring to others and yourself but in time with our commitment God changes us.

I have made a decision. Keep it in my pants till I meet the right girl. Resist all temptation. Oh god I hope I can do it...and not give in. I'm going to need some serious prayer. Thank you all.
