  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well, even hymns have a beat, so I think your bible teacher has a problem with everything music related.

But if he's using the 'drum beats are evil because they are traced back to pagan tribal rituals', then he just needs to get back with reality.

Did your Bible teacher give any basis for this assertion? If so, you've gotta tell us what that is... ^_^

My point is this: There is no Biblical precedent for what instruments are or are not acceptable...

Good flippin' gravy...

For something to even be considered music, it has to have a rhythm, which would require beats. **smacks self in forehead. Hard.**

Hello, they worshipped in the OT times with loud music...some people are so...stupid. Really. **resumes smacking**

Who on earth made this person your bible teacher?
A tambourine is a percussion instrument. They used those back in the day.

I think this is simply trying to justify what one finds personally distasteful.
The argument is so ridiculous...I'd just smile and nod. To tell anyone how dumb this is is to waste your breath on deaf ears.

Okay, I am a believer in "loud clanging cymbals and all," like the rest of you.

Let me bring in another aspect of this situation. I would say that the Bible teacher's opinion is colored by one of two things, more probably by both of them.
  • This is what he was taught, and he has not looked at scripture on it for himself, for whatever reason. Maybe he is concerned with his own submission to authority.
  • There is a weakness in his own life, maybe involving something in his past. He can't listen to certain types of music because it has lead him to sin in the past. Reminds me of the Pharisees who would wear blinders to keep them from looking at women.
In either case, you should take his advice with a grain of salt and pray for him.

Now, if we want to go deep in our relationship with Jesus, sometimes we have to hold standards that are not standards for everyone. That could also be the case with your teacher, except that he seems to be making a universal standard out of this, and that doesn't seem right. We may lead people toward the deep, but we should not push them in.
