I have been going to retreats and stuff but never understood the concept in which everyone keeps shouting at the top of their voices.... I always thought that prayer should be silent... thoughtful.... I hope I dont hurt anybody's feelings here.... but just thought that you guys could answer me...

It's a good point.
I suppose (just my idea) that it's too encourage others to speak up. There may just be someone in the room that's praying for exactly that same thing, or needing an answer, or guidance. It does seem that some folk like doing it more than others though. Could just be clanging gongs.
