Hey Guys....

Im kinda new to this area, so bare with me if my question is a bit obvious...

Now I myself am a Young Earth Creationist, however after learning some stuff in science I have a question on how young earth creationism is still compatable with science.... Noiw you dont need to get worried this isn't an obivous- my science teacher said we all evolved from goop which just happened to appear from nowhere question-- Its more to do with dating.... Now according to what I know of real science the earth is about 10000 years old (? ), however there is a natural phenomena which can be seen to go against that.... you see the speed of light is such that objects that emit light from a great distance could take millions of years to reach the earth.... Now this isn't an attack on creationists from a troll... This is an honest question from someone who is seeking to find answers to a nagging question.... How are these two fact compatible?

Welcome to the forum, geology is not my strong suite but I'll give it a whirl.

There is more then one concept here but lets start with the most obvious. That 'goop' as you're science teacher calls it would have actually been what Darwin called 'a warm little pond' and others have refered to as primordial soup. Since Darwin there has been a prevailing view known as gradualism, this is seen both in biology and geology. The reason this is important is that prior to the advent of gradualism most scientists were Christian men and creationists. The gradual accumulation of aquired traits with no breaks in the continum. The time span for the accumulation of the emergence of the first primordial cells can be as long a 2 billion years. The Creationist claims that all of life appears suddenly and very recently fully formed and are convinced that the evidence indicates exactly that. So you see the answers you seek are anything but obvious.

This brings us to radiometric dating (aka absolute dating) main stream geology regards these test are absolutely reliable based on the decay rate of things like potasium-argon, carbon and various others. What Creationists like Henry Morris (an accomplished geologist) is that these tests are not indicating that the earth is indeed very young. I'm going to link you to a couple of web pages I found helpfull since people often have trouble following me when I try to explain creation science:

Is the lava at Mt St Helens really 1 million years old?

Now the signifigance of this is enormous, the potassium-argon 40 test is what was used to determine that Lucy was actually 3.5 million years old. Creationists argue against this vigerously and if you can get through the technical jargon I think you might find this article helpfull:

Lucy dethroned

If you have anymore questions that you don't feel confortable posting here then you can PM me.

Grace and peace,
Mark

Ah, the starlight question. Interestingly, the creationists have developed a scientifically rigorous model which explains this in terms of Relativity Theory. Dr. Russell Humphreys (a nuclear physicist) has developed his model. Read about it here:

Interestingly, the starlight issue is also a problem for evolutionists, something they generally are loath to reveal:

I am splitting off any posts that are debating and trashing them! TE's, please refrain from posting in this thread at all.
Some of the creationists will have posted replies to the TE's posts, those may have to go, too. My apologies if that takes out anything of importance. PM me if you need a copy of anything deleted.
