Question to Quakers...

Hi...

I have been wondering something for awhile.

What do you do if you do not have a Friends' meeting house to go to for worship? For example the nearest ones to me are about an hour and a half away from me (the own in my city closed) and right now its just not feasible for me to visit one. Is there a way that you can "do it yourself" or something to that effect?

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I was just wondering..

Good question. You'd be surprised at the number of Friends who don't have a meeting house, in which case they hold meetings in their homes, or some other place agreed upon by all members of the meeting. Quakerfinder.org is a good place to go if you want to find a meeting in your area, as it often lists home meetings as well.

Well, as I said in my post right now its not feasible for me to drive 72 or more miles right now. Is there any set down Quaker style or form of worship for a family or perhaps individual? Our local meeting has closed as far as we know. We tried to get in touch with them and the we got a wrong number. *shrugs*

Quakers traditionally worship in silence so it is a meditative form of worship & perfectly feasible for a family or individual to do on their own. There is no set formula. I usually attend a non~denominational church simply because that is what is available where I live. There is a COC but they are a bit noisy for my taste & the teaching is not so good IMO.

Actually you wont find as many silent worship meeting any more. there are some out there but not many. in my yearly meeting of 36 or so meetings we have only two or three. But i did what you did i went to a non-denominational, though it was rather baptist. But not so start forward. my family really liked it. BESIDES being Quaker is more of a life style ANYWAYS.

Are you serious? I've attend many meetings when I lived up in New England. I have never attended a non-silent or programmed one. I wouldn't even know where to find one?

One I use to frequent was in an individuals home. Only had about 5 to 6 people but they met there every Sunday, in silence.

I learn something new everyday.

Me too. I've only been in silent meetings ~ small congregations, mostly older people. Does that make a difference I wonder?
