Question & poll for young earth creationists

How should the six days of creation be measured?

  • Measured forward in time with creative process:

  • Measured backward in time against creative process:

  • Either way is consistent with Genesis:

  • I don't know:

  • I'm not a young earth creationist:

Young earth creationists generally believe that the six days of creation set out in the first chapter of Genesis describe six consecutive 24-hour days (i.e., a total of 144 hours). But how should those 144 hours be measured?

Should it be measured forward with the creative process for 144 hours from the approximate moment of creation?

Or should it be measured backward in time against the creative process for 144 hours toward the approximate time of creation?

Or does it make any difference to you?

Or could either method be consistent with your understanding of what the Bible says?

What are your thoughts? Take the poll. And if you desire to do so, tell us your reasons in your posts. Many thanks.

Louis:

That's what I'm trying to find out. Does it make any difference to the young earth creationists? If you are a YEC and it does make a difference to you, then which more accurately represents your belief? If, on the other hand, you think that it makes no difference and that either way of measuring time would be consistent with Genesis, then vote that way. If I have overlooked an option that needs to be included, please tell me so that I can edit the selection to accurately represent the range of beliefs of young earth creationists (assuming there is a range; I suppose it's possible all may believe the same thing).

I had the impression that it was very important to young earth creationists for the universe to be created in six 24-hour days--even though Genesis indicates that the earth was probably not formed until some time on the second or third day, and the sun doesn't appear until the fourth day.

If it is important to young earth creationists for all of creation to have occurred in those first 144 hours, then they should have some ideas regarding how the time should be measured: forward with the creative process for 144 hours from the approximate moment of creation--or backward in time against the creative process for 144 hours toward the approximate time of creation? Or would either method of measurement satisfy the language of Genesis and your own individual beliefs?

From what I've been taught I believe it is measured forward. But like already mentioned, the word "day" doesn't necessarily refer to a 24-hour period. In Hebrews chapter four, it refers to God still in rest on the seventh day if I'm not mistaken. Personally, I would rather thank God for what he has given us rather than dwell on how he did it.

IMO How is an important question. It leads to understanding and truth, and that can't be a bad thing.

Because we asked how things work we have the computer and eyeglasses and all the other nice things we enjoy today. When you go to the doctor and get a pill that cures a simple illness that would have killed you not that long ago you can thank those brave enough to ask how. As you read this message you can thank those who asked how. Whilw siting in your comfortable house out of the elements thanke those who asked how.

In the Bible we are not banned from asking God how, He seems to get a little miffed at the "Why" questions, but how seems to be fine.

Do only five (5) young earth creationists have an opinion?

Again, if the choices listed do not accurately reflect your opinion, please set out your beliefs in a post to this thread. I will then edit the poll to add the additional option if the others do not properly allow for it. After all, I do want this poll to accurately express your opinion.

Thank you.

Considering that Adam and Eve came about in the sixth day, and Satan has not yet been cast down from heaven, and New Jeruselem has not yet come down from heaven to the new heaven and earth, we are still in the sixth day of the creation. God does not complete His work until the seventh day, and that has not happened yet. So after nearly six thousand years we are still in the sixth day.
How long is a "day", and how do you determine the other "days" lengths?
And without this knowledge how do you determint how the seven "days" of creation are to be measured?
Each "day" could be a different period of time.
