  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've played D&D, V: tM, Werewolf (which I LOVE), Mage, and that other one that I can never remember...

I've never found anything reall 'evil' in any of those, except that I always end up drinking too much Dr. Pepper or eating way too much junk food. I've never wanted to act out the game in real life, and I've never taken a game/character 'too far', like some do.

Its all really left up to the person/people playing. ~shrug~

D&D will only be as evil as you allow it to be. Sure you can run evil campaigns from the book of vile darkness, where your characters destroy and pillage everything in sight.

But you can also run compaigns with things like the book of exhalted deeds, where your characters are always helping people. I am sure you can put a christian spin on it too if your group is so inclined. One of the most hardcore christians I know plays D&D frequently, and at times DMs it. Needless to say he likes paladins :).

Whats not to like about Paladins? ^.^ They rock my socks off! Every time I've played one, I've enjoyed it, and have even used it to, inadvertenly (spelling, cause some havoc.

My fav. type of paladin to play is the sorta reluctant one. "Oh great, you mean I gotta help ALL those people in the burning tavern?" or "Tell me again, why did I decide to join an order that tries to become maryters?" (That was from an amazing game we played where me and a friend played twins who started out both as Paladins, but my friend did some evil acts and became a death guard? and I joined a sect within paladins who would wear light/no armor and simply have faith that God would protect them. Lets just say, after throwing myself infront of a few attacks, I started to really get into it and got a TON of Role-playing exp. points. ^.^)

This is actually a trend we're starting to see with video games. Revently, there's been an increasing amount of games where you can choose to be bad, if you wish it. Take Black and White, for example. You're a God, and you can choose to be bad or good. Choose good, and you can award your villagers with gifts and keep them happy. Choose bad, and you can inspire fear and awe in them by burning down the grainary and (literally) hurling a few of them into the river.

True Crime, GTA, the Everquest series, Dungeon Keeper, and so on.

I like it.

(btw, it doesn't look like there's much opposition to D&D! No Jack Chick fans here?) ;)

Guess not, and my original response was mostly directed at them; the ones who might not know much about D&D but have heard about it from people like Chick. I was hoping to be informative, but I guess nobody around here needs informing. ;)

I played AD&D from the ages of about 7-14, attended and played in a few regional competitons. On the street where I grew up there were 13 kids all within 3 years of each other. So outside of football and stickball it was something all of could do together. I think that was the biggest positive from the game. It was something that anyone could play and play well regardless of any athletic abality. We also tried to make a break into Top Secret when that came out but the lure of demons and magic was too much for us at younger ages.

All the evil D&D players scared them off.
I've seen a few chick supporters on the forums, but they don't seem to stay long in the debate portions of the forums. Although I couldn't guess why. :)

I couldn't play a paladin. I usually play chaotic clerics that... aquire donations... through means that paladins don't approve of.

Or rangers.

Either way, it be great if we could play sometime, I think it be fun to finally have a paladin to argue with! (I usually get stuck with a paladin that more dedicated to good than law, to the extent that they tend to "not notice" the nobility are getting poorer and the poor and I are getting richer).
