  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was translating Genesis and would like to ask a question.

Did God create the sea creatures and birds from "nothing" but made the land animals from the ground? Also, it appears the Lord blessed the birds and sea creatures but not the beasts of the Land? Anyone have any views on this? Thanks.

I think that the blessing at the end of the sixth day is a blessing not only on man but also on the land animals as well. But you're right, this is one of the more important unanswered questions in my mind as well, both from the standpoints of those who take it historically and those who take it metaphorically.

I think you need to go back a bit to
Gen 1:20 And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky."
and
Gen 1:11
And God said, "Let the earth put forth (or cause to sprout grass hiphil imperfect), herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it, on the earth;" and it was so.
Gen 1:12
And The earth brought forth (caused to come out or brought out hiphil imperfect) grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with its seed in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.
In each case God commands the earth or the sea to do the work of producing life. This is still God creating, but he is creating by ordaining processes in the natural world. In the early church it was interpreted as God enabling spontaneous generation. Some TEs, including myself, read it as God designing the processes science now calls abiogenesis and evolution.
