Need help finding a Hebrew Font CF will recongnize....
Hi all you wonderful Techies out there does anyone know of a Hebrew font that we can upload to CF for the Classical Hebrew Forum? Our teachers have lots to teach but the fact that we need to post in Hebrew and do our homework in Hebrew on line as well makes it hard, cuz as of now CF isnt ready to let us do that...we need help finding a fix for this problem(sorry I dont know all the technical words but you know what I mean:p)

Windows XP (and 2000/2003/Vista) has the built-in ability to display Hebrew fonts on your system without the need to install language packs or special localized versions of the OS. To see Hebrew fonts on your Windows XP computer you MUST perform the following tasks precisely in the order listed here. Not doing so might cause your computer to display ??????? instead of Hebrew fonts, especially in Office applications.

I'm curious though, do you typically copy/paste your Hebrew text from a Hebrew text editor or Notepad, or do you switch locales (AltGr)?

She may be back later but let me explain what I know we need and let her fill in where I lack information k?

What we need to do is copy her lessons right into threads on this forum so that then the rest of us can do our homework, copy paste parts of the lesson into questions and use the material for tests and quizes ....but right now we cant cuz CF doesnt recognize Hebrew.... The CF Tech Guys want us to present them with a link to the Hebrew we want to use(or several links so they have choices)

Does that help?

Im just the gatherer of info so I dont know if that helped or not.....:)

OK, I just saw the last question (at this time... :)) at "Lesson #1: Alphabet and Phonics".
Did a quick google on "hebrew font+vowels+cantillation marks" and came up with a couple links:

Fonts for Bible with Cantillation Marks
http://www.mechon-mamre.org/c/c.htm

Ezra SIL Hebrew Unicode Font
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=EzraSIL_Home&_sc=1

CF members jaihare and Remco recommended a few fonts at:
http://christianforums.com/showthread.php?t=7296271

A number of Hebrew fonts on display:

I am at work with a lousy wi-fi connection - don't know how long I will have a signal....

What we want to be able to do is install a font on the forum so people can more easily type in Hebrew in their posts. We will need the ability to type vowels and two accent marks as well.

I saw these things earlier as well but didn't have time to check it out. Tish would you ask the tech guys if any of these would give people on the forum the ability to type in Hebrew in their posts with vowels and accent marks?

Even if we do get this part worked out I will continue publishing the lessons the way that I am doing it now. You will not be able to copy and paste from what I am publishing because the only way to upload it to google docs you will not be able to copy it. The problem is if I make it editable text the computer interprets the Hebrew according to an English keyboard and we loose the Hebrew.

I think our best bet is to get an easy way for people to type in their posts. This will make it easier to communicate. As the lessons progress it is just too much work for me to try to type a lesson directly into a post. It may not look like it right now but it is

you copied this from somewhere yes? What is the keyboard layout - to get the vowels to matchup? Also I am not seeing any cantillation marks in what you have here. Are they available in any of these fonts?

Yes, just pasted into Notepad from: http://www.mechon-mamre.org/i/t/t0101.htm, then here.

debi b, what editor are you using? Can it save as unicode text? I just saw bpad at google, and didn't know if that's what you're using or not, but it's supposed to help with bidi text.

Pardon my ignorance... but I saw explained somewhere, and promptly forgot what cantillation marks are.:confused::sorry:

Try typing your words, in Hebrew, into a Word document (being careful to go right to left!!), then cut and paste those words into CF. That's how I do it on occasion.

Both Windows and OSX have ways for you to switch to a Hebrew keyboard. It's under language/international settings.

when Ideas come in from other places I will post them here:)

I am using Davka to create the lessons. It is fantastic for this project. It allows me to switch easily between English and Hebrew.

In this phase this is a very important ability for me. What I am trying to do is to create an opportunity to build vocabulary while still leaning heavily on your first language. After each vacabulary list I will be weaving into a chapter of Deuteronomy the Hebrew words that have been introduced. So, I am not creating this on-line, but am sharing it.

Because there is such a huge difference in the sentence structure and the way things are translated I need to really be careful doing this - it is more time consuming than you might think for me.

I am limiting my use of the cantillation marks to two. They are the extra dashes and other marks in addition to the dots and dashes that are the vowels. Only one of the marks is initially important it will not be until the back end that the other will be used more often.

The meteg referenced on this page is the small vertical line to the left of the vowels on this page:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dg73krgp_116hqdd7xf2

The next mark I need is on this page under accents:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dg73krgp_56d2px4vdz

I had origianally chosen a different mark, but changed it because people said they couldn't see it very well. This mark is not commonly used in texts. I have already written about 75 pages (will be posting more soon) and it would be very difficult to change it now.

I saw Davka just yesterday debi b, well, ran across it. Is there a way for you to export your lessons in Davka to unicode text format? If you are using tables or other html-like structure in Davka, that would be problematic for pasting the lessons here at CF, but maybe you could just paste the text. If you were able to open a Davka saved unicode text doc in Notepad, select all, copy, then paste here at CF, that would be terrific! That would make it much easier to study with, but just my 2¢.
