Adam's name in Gen 2:19 is from the Hebrew word 'adam (aw-dawm') which is the very same word rendered man in Gen 1:26-27. In other words, Adam's name is that of his species. So then, regardless of their gender, every human being is an 'adam.

Movies on DVD often contain an option on the menu where they show you some deleted scenes. The second chapter of Genesis is like that. Chapter 1 is the Play Movie option, while chapter 2 contains Deleted Scenes.

I wish there was more science in the second chapter, but apparently God thought the construction of the earth might be just a bit too complicated for the relatively unsophisticated peoples of the author's day.

I think the confusion is when some people interpret the first woman as a different one, some even gave her the name Lilith. Now we obviously don't know for sure. But I'd say if the bible doesn't say it, let it be. Ask God when we reach heaven.

But a good thing for you to think about though, is why is Eve made out of the ribs of Adam? Why not the bone from the skull or the bone from the feet? Well, that way neither will Eve be above Adam or below Adam, so they were made to walk side by side.

A woman still needs cover from a man hence the submission, of course the husband needs to love her unconditionally.

There are theories out that the two stories show two different events. But since the stories are short and we weren't around at the time, there is no concrete way of proving much.

Genesis was written well after the events of Genesis occurred. It takes a while for written language to establish, so stories were passed along verbally. For years most scholars attributed the authorship to Moses (around 1600 BC). Now they are considering a few authors.

Written language in the surrounding area developed around 1000 BC. Think of how Egyptian events were written with picture symbols.

Genesis shows an account of how God intervened in the lives of people. Christians will have many strong opinions about the first chapters an disagree with each other. People get hung up on the concept of Creation and think that if they can't agree with the beginning, then the rest of the book won't make sense.

But God has all sorts of mysteries that He will eventually reveal to us. Walking with Him involves a lifetime of digging, analyzing, and praying.

Dear wyl,

Genesis outline principles about creation and separation from God. The stories should not be taken literally.

For example, two main Christian churches (The Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church) have actually accepted Darwin's evolution theory. According to Genesis, God's entire creation was completed in a mere seven days. Many Christians now feel that this is just a metaphor (although many also think otherwise so there is some disagreement here!). This means that these two main churces do not believe that there was a first human male and a first human female as described in Genesis.

Similarly, Adam and Eve are symbols in the story of man's fall.

To find out more about the entire story of Adam and Eve you download a book which interpret the story in detail by going to thesonsoflight.wordpress.

It's really disappointing to know that people say that "seven days" are "just a metaphor". For that is what we believe. In this way, I just wonder what else are "metaphor"s. And what is not a "metaphor".

Dear ywl,

Why do you say that Genesis "seven days" is not a metaphor when creation is not yet accomplished?

Don't you realize that the creation of man into God's image (the goal of God) isn't accomplished yet? God's image is light and man is not yet light. God is glory and man is not yet glorified. Only Jesus became glorified and manifested God's light to three of his disciples on the mountain top.

We Christians talk about God's image as though he takes the form of man because it is said that we are made in his image.

But are we already made in his image? No, not yet. Here are the proof:

We know that God is Spirit. Jesus said this in John:

"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (Jn 4:24)

But we are not born of God's Spirit yet, for Jesus also said:

"Jesus answered, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.' " (Jn 3:5).

If we are not born of spirit, yet, how can our present form be an image of God? After all, God is Spirit and Spirit is invisible and has no form. As Jesus also said:

"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (Jn 3:8)

So, what can we understand from these sayings?

The answer lies in knowing that the invisible Spirit of God has the power to manifest itself as light. Anyone who is born of Spirit has the power to manifest himself as light, just like Jesus.

The incident is recorded in Matthew's:

"Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light." (Mt 17:1-2)

In deed, God is light, as it is also written:

"For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light." (Ps 36:9)

"..the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth." (Ps 50:2)

"Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment.."
(Ps 104:2)

"..and light dwells with Him." (Dan 2:22)

"His brightness was like the light;.." (Hab 3:4)

"..How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set your glory above the heavens!" (Ps 8:1)

"Restore us O God; cause Your face to shine, and we shall be saved!" (Ps 80:3)

"For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.." (Ps 84:11)

"This is the message which we have heard from Him and declared to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all." (1Jn 1:5)

Light is, therefore, God's image. And Jesus was the first to be created in God's image - the first begotten of God.

So, man is still not created of God's image of light. But he will be, for it is also written:

"I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness." (Jn 12:46)

"You are the light of the world.." (Mt 5:14)

"Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun.." (Mt 13:43)

"Now, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you,..?" (Mt 6:30)

".. believe in the light that you may become sons of light." (Jn 12:36)

This is the reason Jesus said that God is still working and that all will be made well on the last day, the "Sabbath day" and "seventh day" of Genesis' creation.

So, as you can see, we are yet to take on God's image, so we are still "6th day" man. There is one final act which God must accomplish before man become glorified in God's image - sanctification - and this occurs within the "seventh day" of creation, which is about to happen.

Go to thesonsoflight.wordpress to find out a full explanation.

RE: It's really disappointing to know that people say that "seven days" are "just a metaphor". For that is what we believe. In this way, I just wonder what else are "metaphor"s. And what is not a "metaphor".

That's just it. Where do spiritualizers draw the line in their madness? Is the Bible's God himself a metaphor too?

When people begin construing the Bible's texts to mean whatever suits their purpose, then they create confusion, a virtual Tower Of Babel; and the result is: nobody can know for sure what anything in the Bible really means.

Here's a good rule of thumb that has served me well for the past 41 years:

When the original sense makes sense, look for no other sense.

†. Eph 4:11-15 . . He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ. Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth.

The prediction below was made about 1,900 years ago, so that by now it has come very true.

†. 2Tim 4:3-4 . . For a time is coming when [Christians] will no longer heed wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever they want to hear. They will reject the truth and follow fiction.

Why do people spiritualize? Answer: Because they simply cannot believe the Bible is true as-is. It's like drinkers who can't stomach the taste of straight scotch whisky so they add some ingredients like soda water, 7-Up, Hawaiian punch, and/or sugar to make it palatable so that the scotch is no longer pure, but rather, it's actually contaminated.

You can be assured that the six Days of creation are literal 24-hour civil days. How do I know that? Answer: because no other place in the entire Bible are days so clearly bounded by Evenings and Mornings.

Evenings and Mornings are a universal language. Everybody knows what they mean, and what they imply. They sort of remind me of .pdf documents and attachments which can be opened on any computer with Adobe Reader installed; whether a PC or an Apple, makes no difference: PDFs are universal. Apparently the author wanted to make very sure nobody misunderstood him.

I recently purchased, and watched, a DVD set from the History channel titled: How The Earth Was Made. The geological evidence supporting a 4.5 billion-year age of the earth is overwhelming. So then, how do we harmonize geology with Genesis? Piece of cake; and it's so simple that I'm surprised more of the Bible's opponents don't think of it.

Though Genesis informs the world of the number of days that God utilized to create the cosmos, it's totally silent about the amount of time that lapsed between each succeeding day. Get my drift? The number of man-hours God recorded on his timecard were a mere 144; but He obviously dabbled at the task a day here and a day there until He was done. It's sort of like a cabinet maker that has to set a project aside for a bit while he waits for glues and coatings to dry. Some things just can't be rushed if there's to be any hope of a job well done.

†. Gen 1:31 . . God inspected everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.

Dear Weber,

Everything, when understood, has no room for questioning. And God intends to enlighten man by demystifying all that he has said. For it is written:

“These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.” (Jn16:25).

When we know the Father in plain language we shall also know the Son in plain language, for it is also written:

"Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." (Jn 3:2-3)

And to know both is to secure eternal life:

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (Jn 17:3)

So, you think God and his son has already been revealed? Not quite:

“..but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.” (Rev 10:7)

And you still think this "revelation" of who God and his son is will be done by sticking to the old understanding of the gospel words?

Eternal life has not been given yet because the seventh day of creation is still unaccomplished.

Heron,

Yes, in deed.

And let us not forget what Jesus said about scholars who "preserve" and "protect" the word of God so selfishly that they neither understand them nor let others understand them. What do you think Jesus meant by accusing the scholars and scribes of "not allowing others to enter the kingdom"?

Since you probably have read the scripture many more times than the average Christian, I presume you also know that unless one understands the word of God, there is no hope for him to enter the kingdom?

Now, will those who know everything about scripture enter heaven or will little ones enter heaven?

RE: Eternal life has not been given yet

I suspect you may be confusing eternal life with immortality; they are not the same. Immortality is the primary characteristic of an imperishable body, while eternal life is the nature of God's existence. Though immortality is reserved for a later date, eternal life is obtainable before passing on.

In the passages below, note the grammatical tense of the "have" verbs. They're all in the present tense, not future, indicating that believers possess eternal life right now; no delay and no waiting period.

†. John 3:36 . . He who believes in the Son has eternal life

†. John 6:47 . .Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.

†. John 5:24 . . I assure you, those who heed my message, and trust in God who sent me, have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from Death into Life.

The recipients of John's first epistle were in possession of eternal life even before his letter arrived.

†. 1John 5:13 . . I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

According to God's testimony as an expert witness in all matters pertaining to eternal life, people passing themselves off as Christians, while not possessing eternal life, do not have His son; viz: they are quite christless.

†. 1John 5:9-12 . .We accept human testimony; but God's testimony carries more weight because it's the testimony of God, which He has given about His son. . . And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has The Son has this life; he who does not have this life, does not have God's son.

Christians of the opinion that they can have Christ without first obtaining eternal life, openly insinuate that the Bible's God is a person of low ethical integrity who cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

†. 1John 5:10 . . Any individual who disbelieves God makes Him a liar, because they haven't believed the testimony God has given about His son.

Christians without eternal life are not only christless, but they also exist in a state of unbelief, and in grave danger of the wrath of God.

†. John 3:36. .Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disbelieves the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.

How can you say that eternal life is different from immortality when God gave man his very breath?

Is not your biological life given by God? Is life not God himself? Is it not the spirit that gives life?

You study the word but you don't know there is only one life?

And all the living share this life? This is why He is called the Living God for all LIVE to Him! We are born into eternal life but we lose it. Adam was born with eternal life but lost it when he died. And like Adam, we are also born into eternal life and we are still losing it.

Now, Christ came to reveal the life to us - to know God and his son is to know our own life and hence how not to lose it. To know this truth is to be sanctified. But no one has been sanctified yet because the truth has yet to be revealed.

Whe it is revealed we shall become like him.

RE: How can you say that eternal life is different from immortality when God gave man his very breath?

Human life is a created kind of life that had its beginning in the book of Genesis; while eternal life is the life of God, who had neither a beginning nor will ever have an ending. From the vanishing point in the past, to the vanishing point in the future, God has always been, and He will continue to be. Eternal life is an "I am" kind of life; viz: it's ever-present; whereas human life is momentary.

Human life is a dead kind of life. If that were not so, then Jesus wouldn't have bothered to come.

†. John 10:10 . . I am come that they might have life

†. Eph 2:1 . . And you He made alive, who were dead

†. 2Cor 5:14 . . If one died for all, then were all dead

Jesus is the authorized dispenser of eternal life and nobody has it till they get it from him; so then, not everyone has it; only those whom God designates as a gift to His son.

†. John 17:2-3 . .You granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

Jesus grants eternal life to his sheep, and only to his sheep.

†. John 10:27-28 . . My sheep heed my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish

As I pointed out previously, eternal life is restricted to believers.

†. John 3:36 .

The recipients of John's first epistle were in possession of eternal life by means of their belief.

†. 1John 5:13 . . I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Unbelievers do not have eternal life.

†. John 3:36. .Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disbelieves the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.

RE: Adam was born with eternal life but lost it when he died.

Eternal life is the life of God; ergo: it's a kind of life that cannot die; therefore it cannot be lost.

†. John 10:27-28 . . I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish

Adam was created with human life; which is a perishable kind of life. If that were not so, then he wouldn't have needed to supplement his diet with nourishment from the tree of life in order to prevent himself from dying of old age. Adam was an air-breathing creature. Had he been suffocated, Adam would have died. Adam was a creature whose life is in its blood. If you had slashed his jugular with a box cutter, Adam would have bled to death. Adam not only didn't have eternal life, he didn't even so much as have immortality. Killing Adam was only too easy. All God had to do was deny him access to the tree of life and let nature take its course.

Where the Bible says death came into the human race via the sin of one man; it means that death became mandatory, whereas before, it wasn't.

"Human life is a created kind of life that had its beginning in the book of Genesis; while eternal life is the life of God, who had neither a beginning nor will ever have an ending. "Human life is a dead kind of life. If that were not so, then Jesus wouldn't have bothered to come."

What "kind" of life did you think Adam had before the fall? What "kind" of life do you think ADAM LOST? If Adam did not sin, do you think he will still be alive today?

When your spirit leaves you, you die. When your spirit enters you again, your breath is restored because it is the Spirit that gives life.

"that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days;.." (Deut 30:20)

This is what Jesus came to restore because man isn't suppose to die:

“What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your truth? Hear, O LORD, and have mercy on me; And be my helper!” (Ps 30:9-10)

“This will be written for a generation yet to come, that a people yet to be created my praise the LORD. For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary; from heaven the LORD viewed he earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to release those appointed to death.” (Ps 102:18-20)

“The dead do not praise the LORD, nor anyone who go down into silence.” (Ps 115:17)

“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also, their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun. Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart; for God has already accepted your works. Let your garments always be white..” (Ecc 9:5-8)

“For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your truth. The living, the living man, he shall praise You, as I do this day; the father shall make known Your truth to the children.” (Is 38:18-19)

“God did not chose them, nor give them knowledge; so they perish because they did not understand..” (Baruch 3:27-28)

“She (the Truth) is the book of the commandments of God, and the law that endures forever. All who possess her will live, and those who desert her will die.. proceed towards the shining of her light. Do not give your glory to others..” (Baruch 4:1-3)

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hos 4:6)

Now, I presume you are going to say, "All the passages mean another "kind" of death?

Christians continue to die, so their scholars need to reason this out for the masses. This was how falsehood was conceived for the entire flock.

If you do not even know this truth, all your other scriptural knowledge is inconsequential and you will also follow them to the pit - all of you. If you do not know what you are seeking after, how can you get there?

I shall leave you now to ponder the Truth I have given you in my postings. Surely, if you understand them, you shall possess the life Jesus promised. God need not convince men. Men must convince themselves when they are ready.

RE: What "kind" of life did you think Adam had before the fall?

Adam was created with human life.

RE: What "kind" of life do you think ADAM LOST?

†. Gen 2:16-17 . . And Yhvh God commanded the man, saying: From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.

Did Adam die the instant he ate the forbidden fruit? No. He continued to live another 800 years after the birth of his son Seth— a son born after Adam and his wife Eve were evicted from the garden.

The Hebrew word for day in that passage is yowm (yome) which is an ambiguous word with more than one application. It can indicate any amount of time ranging from a single 24-hour civil day to an entire era of many thousands of years. Bible students have to be very careful not to narrow yowm to a strict definition and thus force it to mean the same thing every time regardless of the context.

The "day" spoken of in Gen 2:17 is an era of death that began with Adam's transgression and has continued for many years on down through the centuries.

†. Gen 3:19 . . By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.

†. Rom 5:12 . . Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men

†. 1Cor 15:22 . . In Adam all die

†. Heb 9:26 . . It is appointed unto men to die once

Did Adam die? Yes; he did; and so will you, and anyone else reading this post will die too because death's day is not over yet.

†. 1Cor 15:26 . .The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

On the last night of a week-long Billy Graham crusade in San Diego back in the late 1970's, Mr Graham made a remark that went like this: "In fifty years just about everyone in this stadium tonight will be dead. Look around you. That's a lot of graves."

Over fifty thousand people were there that night and from my seat, I could see almost all of them at once with a single glance. His remark made a very deep impression on me.

BTW: thirty years have gone by since that crusade. I'd be very curious to know how many people attending that night have already gone on; and his prediction has twenty more years left to go.

†. Jas 4:14 . .What is your life? You are but a mist that appears for a little while, and then evaporates.

I myself have been on death row now for almost 66 years and expect to die at any time either by crime, accident, or natural causes.

†. John 7:6 . . Jesus told them: The right time for me has not yet come; but for you any time is right.

RE: If Adam did not sin, do you think he will still be alive today?

Maybe and maybe not. Adam could've easily lost his life in any number of ways in the garden. He was an air-breathing, flesh and blood creature whose life was in its blood just like every other air-breathing creature. Adam wasn't a superman; he was just an ordinary man, and as Arnold Schwarzenegger once said in the movie Predator: "If it bleeds; we can kill it"

The key to Adam's survival was the tree of life in the midst of the garden. According to Rev 22:2, the foliage of the tree is therapeutic. I take it from Genesis and Revelation, that as long as Adam had access to that tree, he would die from neither old age nor from disease. In point of fact; all God had to do to insure Adam's death (and ours too) was block access to the tree and let nature take its course.

I take a medication called levoxyl every day because my thyroid went south on me about thirteen years ago. As long as I take the medication each day, I will continue to live. However, that's way different than immortality. An immortal body doesn't need medication to stay alive, nor does it require the therapeutic leaves of a special tree. An immortal body cannot be terminated in any way at all because an immortal body is indestructible.

RE: Christians continue to die

For the nth time: biblically, eternal life and immortality are not synonymous. Of course Christians continue to die because eternal life is a spirit kind of life, while immortality is a physical kind of life. The one can be seen, while the other cannot be seen.

†. John 3:8 . .The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of The Spirit.

A Spirit birth produces a spirit kind of life.

†. John 3:6-7 . . Flesh gives birth to flesh, but The Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Believers have eternal life now, but they won't be immortal till later when they get their brand-spanking-new supernatural bodies. For now, only Christ is a superman; in the future, every believer's body will be indestructible.

†. 1Cor 15:51-54 . . Listen, I tell you a secret: We Christians will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be transformed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory.
