  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi all,
I have just a few questions about the army.
1) I am really soft/sensitive how can I make myself less sensitive to yelling and not getting worked up over failure

2) What is the average time you spend on a base before being deployed in active duty as an 11b.

3) What are some things I can do to get in APFT badge worthy shape?

Thanks
Chilaha

1) You're going to have to realize that when people are yelling at you, don't take it personally. Learn and move on. Same goes for failure. It's a learning experience, take your licks and move on.

2) No idea. Varies from place to place.

3) Don't rely on group PT alone. PT on your own time as well.

What kind of exercises should I be doing on my own time?

1) The army raelly doesn't do a lot of that anymore, but if you're planning on being an 11b, then yes you'll probaly get yelled at. You just get used to it after a while.

2) Deployment depends a lot on what unit you're assigned to. But as far as I can tell, deployments are slowing down. The wars are ending.

3) If you want to increaes your push-ups and I'd recommend lifting weights. Do as many sit-ups as you can before you run and that will stregnthen your leg muscles. I recommend doing elevated sit-ups at the gymn. Those increase my sit-up total greatly.

-My husband, served for 5 years in the Army.

1) Why would you want to get a job that exposes you to that? In all seriousness I'm concerned you are setting yourself up to get stressed out.

2) Couple months of training. I'm guessing 4 to 6 months from starting boot camp to getting deployed depending on training cycles.

3) Eat healthy and work out. Avoid alcohol and cigarettes and obviously avoid drugs.

Being able to not let yelling bother you is something that will come with time, the more it happens the more it wont bother you anymore. It will help if you simply keep your head down, complete your tasks to standard and do what your told, don't be that guy who attracts attention to himself. You have to believe in yourself and disregard others, and know that they don't really mean to hurt you, there are just trying to do their job which is make you complete the task to standard.

Not sure when you'll deploy... if the war doesn't end on time it will probably be about 12 months or less. Most units home stabilization time (time between deployments) is about 12-18 months. If your at FT. Bragg, FT. Stewart, FT. Hood... these posts who continually deploy and the war isn't done then you'll probably go within 18 months.

You'll get used to the yelling, Basic training is actually MUCH MUCH MUCH softer than it used to be. I know not because of rumors but because I've seen it with my eyes.
If you have a good drill sgt. which you will if your in the infantry, they will not let you fail. Show them how bad you want it, and they will respond in turn.

Most likely a year to 18 months, but honestly it all depneds on that units scheule when u get there. could be a matte of weeks...

Drill instructors are not yelling at you personaly. You have been selected to participate in a "training moment." The example is for everyone. They can't kill you. You're not special, just another recruit. They want everyone to feel part of the same group. Suffering together, supporting one another, sacrificing for each other are shills you will need to survive as an 11B.

When I was in basic training my drill sergeant didn't yell much. He was of the "walk softly and carry a big stick" mentality. When he was displeased, he wouldn't yell - you would sweat. Another thing, your platoon is basic training will have at least one recruit who is a complete idiot. You will pay for his mistakes - time and time and time again.

1. Don't take things personally.
2. To many things could happen to give a valid answer.
3. Crossfit, P90X, Insanity, or any number of workout plans.

all the replies to your post have been good ones and worth reading carefully, BUT let me give you some advise.

1. Choose a job skill (MOS) that will benefit you when you leave the military.

2. The combat arms, of which Infantry is one, can be very boring when not actually involved in real operations. If you are in a garrison environment bear in mind that the Army is not out playing war games all the time... so, what do you think they do when not on field training exercises?

what do I know? Been there, done it...

Again, rethink your choice of MOS (John Wayne lied)... think of your future, not many job openings on the street for an Infantryman or tank driver.... get the illusion of grandeur, glory and pretty nurses out of your mind... think about it.
