  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Something I saw brought up on another forum, that I've never really heard talked about.

If you believe that abortion should be illegal, what do you think that the penalty should be for doctors or anyone else who perform abortions?
What about for the women who have abortions?

In Ireland I think that there is a 12 year sentence. Not sure, probably am wrong, there isn't too much information since no-one has ever been charged for having one.

I'll try to find a definite answer.

Edit: The 12 year thing was part of a referendum that the Irish electorate rejected and would have been a maximum punishment for adding abortions. So I don't know the punishment. To be honest it has never been an issue.

If reducing abortion by making it illegal is the pro-life stance, then I would say that the penalty would need harsh enough to scare most doctors for performing them and women receiving them.

Life in jail? Torture? Death? I don't know, but I do know that simply making it illegal won't do anything. Harsh penalties do work, as we see in Singapore.

Whether they are actually better for society is questionable as well as transitioning a lax penalty society into a harsh penalty society. We all know what happened during prohibition.

I think for the performance of an illegal abortion, it should fall under the three strike rule:

First strike- 5 yr max sentence and 5K fine

Second Strike- 10yr sentence and 10K fine

Third Strike- 25 yr sentence and 30K fine.

The death penalty is not an option, as I don't support its usage in the first place.

Those are the max punishments they can recieve. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get that unless someone died due to their practice of an illegal procedure.

Since abortion is legal and most likely will not be made illegal, docs have nothing to worry about.

If it was made illegal, I can promise you that many more people would die.

Oh my...back to the middle ages.....

Really, have you guys any idea what this will do?

- scary butchers preforming abortions in dark alleys
- women with infections
- women that bleed to death
- horror ways of removing the embryo
- unclean
- shame
- hate

We've been there......and yet abortions were done anyway. Young girls that get pregnant by accident, because of whatever the reason (lack of education, afraid to ask the pill, afraid to say no to the bf...and so on). Would you want your daughter be treated by a butcher in some dark back alley?

And Doctors in jail because they commit abortions???? Oh my goodness.......

What about the women who are poor and have abortions for economic reasons. Heck even the pill isn't 100% proof.....You can get pregnant, even if you use the proper precautions....

What about horrific deformed embryo's? Should they be born and suffer pain and anguish in the short time that they live?

What about women who are raped? Yes, a small group of women, but even one woman is important enough to be able to get proper medical attention.

What about women who have a disease where pregnancies can kill the mother? Should they just give birth and die?

How cruel are pro-lifers anyway?

I'm pro life. However I'm not pro anti abortion legislation.I don't believe any hearts will be changed by legislation. Nor do I believe that abortion will be eliminated by it.

Doctor: Suspension of licence to pratice for a year minimum. Then allowed General practice for 5 years as a pediatrician. Only allowed to re-enter the OBGYN field after that. Second offense (after said punishment served) loss of licence permanent.

For the Woman? nothing - She will be on the guilt train the rest of her life.

Why don't you try addressing the OP instead of dragging it into another abortion debate?

i agree to something like that.

suspencion of licence for the doctor and education for the woman of what exactly she wanted to do. i don't think many women know the abortion procedure or the physical and emotional side affects of abortion.

for me, the perfect scenario would be that if a woman was not allowed to give abortion, her child is taken away from her the minute she delivers and never has the chance to see it again (for some that would be a great relief, but there are women that fell really want the child once they deliver).

maybe the law should leave a tiny space for some cases (medical issues, rape)

I hope you aren't one of those pro-lifers that compares abortion to murder? The differences in punishment certainly illustrate that you don't consider them the same. You don't consider the unborn as valuable as anyone already born, otherwise the punishment would be similiar.

And if you don't consider them the same, then how do you rationalize the fetus's right to life over the woman's right not to have her body enslaved by another human? Is a slave justified in killing his capturer to gain freedom? By your comments the capturer in this situation doesn't have a basic right to life equal to other humans. Sub-human existence if you will. So a woman should have her body enslaved to a sub-human lifeform and be punished for killing it to gain freedom?

Let anyone reading that likes to call abortion murder to consider whether they would remain consistent with that descriptive by levying the same punishment.

They might not have 30 thousand (although I'm sure some would.. depending on their regular practice) but if they were actually a doctor they would have insurance. If abortion was illegal the number of non MD's performing them would probably increase significantly and you're right.. large fines would most likely be difficult to collect from them. Not to mention nothing stops illegal abortions.

I'd say a significant number of doctors performing abortions aren't gyn's to begin with.
