Yes, rwilliams, that is important to point out. The literary form is actually using the term "day" in the 24-hour sense, but the WHOLE construct is figurative. My favorite analogy is the poet who is using a "tree" as a symbol for a family. He will describe the tree in the poem, and actually be referring to "tree" in the actual "leaf and branch" sense for the purposes of the poem. But that does not mean the poem is actually about a tree, it is about a family.
