  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, at the end of the year our family will be moving to another city and I have found that there is a Baptist Church really close by.

I have got a few questions:

1. Does the Baptist Church have an official uniform doctrine overall? i.e. is the Baptist Church in the USA the same as a Baptist Church in Australia?

2. What are the differences between Baptists and other christian denominations? By that I don't mean doctrine- I mean culturally. e.g. are Baptists more conservative than Assembly of God? If I turned up to church in trousers instead of a skirt would I be frowned upon?

3. What is the view of women's role in the church?

4. Are your church services more likely to focus on spiritual anointings or more on scripture? Is Hillsong type music or more traditional lyrics with modern style used?

5. Is Rick Warren a "patron saint" of the Baptist Church? (revealing Roman Catholic upbringing there. ;) )

6.Is the Baptist Church sympathetic to "Purpose-driven" theology or Emergent Church theology?

Thanks for your answers so far. I have listened to a fair few online sermons now and I keep on finding I am overall most impressed with Baptist preachers who have the guts to teach all of the Gospel/Bible and not just the politically correct stuff.

mlqurgw -does that mean that women never have any leadership position at all such as deacon or worship leader? BTW I think overall I prefer the male leadership model.

Communion - what kind of subsects are there? Can you give a brief description of the main types? As for Rick Warren "patron saint" - that thought came when listening to a long critique of one of his talks on the Fighting for the Faith radio show.

I agree with the no answer. There are actually several different kinds of Baptist Churches. I belong to a Southern Baptist Church. While most Baptist Churches are similar in beliefs some differ slightly. We started a Baptist church to reach young adults and some people wear shorts on Sunday mornings. I would recommend visiting this church and if you like it and feel comfortable there ask to meet with the pastor or other staff member and see if you can get a copy of there beliefs.

Communion is right...Baptists are all over the map with their beliefs...some are Reformed, while others hold to the Arminian view...some have contemporary worship, while others stick to the old hymns..pretty much all believe that only men can be pastors or deacons. Some are more charismatic than others...

I've visited and ministered at many Baptist churches and you never know until you get there what it might be like.
