Are the assumptions of a reformational worldview as opposed to an Arminian worldview, and the assumptions of an Arminian worldview as opposed to a reformational worldview so deeply embedded into the psyche of those who hold to their specific positions that it becomes a logical, rational and even Scriptural log-jam?

I have been having some discussion with an Arminian friend and it seems as though it matters not what the logic of my argument may be or even what Scriptures I bring to the table, that we are at an impasse. When I even bring up Ephesians, Chapter 1, the response is, "well I guess that I read that differently than you do!"

How in the name of Pete does one read Ephesians 1 "differently?"

Indeed, it is very difficult. I think the key to coming to terms with this discrepancy is understanding how incredibly blessed we are to have been enabled to understand the truth of the Word. It is by grace we are saved. It also follows that it is by grace that we know anything of theology.

It is very helpful to know and understand the purpose of the Bible. The purpose of the Word is redemption. As Jesus said, we search the Scriptures because in them we think we have eternal life. And as he also said that they are them that speak of him. If eternal life comes by the grace of God, then so much more the correct interpretation of the Scriptures.

We must understand that God has ordained the deception of such as Arminians for a purpose. On the other hand, he has purposed our knowledge also according to his good and pleasing will. It is frustrating for us to know the truth so clearly but not be able to convince others of it. They ought to know better, we say. It's not like they're non-believers who have been purposed to disbelief. But this line of thinking is incorrect. Just as the reprobate are purposed to disbelief, so are even Christians purposed to bad theology. It is a part of his sovereign decree; hence, it is a glorious mystery to us.

Instead of allowing the deception of others to affect us, we should instead pray for them, knowing that we are shown greater favor unto greater understanding. The fact that God has chosen us to be a vessel for his truth and has no chosen them should provoke humility and tenderness toward them on our part. What an amazing, gracious gift to have been granted this understanding.

I think that you really need to catch someone early in their walk, in order to help them understand it all. Just 2 weeks agoI was discussing the 5 points with someone, and thought there was huge holes. Then as we talked more, and I read more, I could barely believe some of the objections that I had. :p

It will take some work on your part, but now you must delve into the original languages, or at least find a good exegetical work on Ephesians 1. The great part about Reformed theology is it's strength is in exegesis. If your Arminian friend still "reads it differently", I suggest you exhort him to prove his reading based on exegesis.

Hang in there.

I have a friend who was A.of G. and very Arminian. We work together and often spoke on the subject of predestination. For years it seemed as though he just could not see it, then one day, after six years of discussion, he saw it clear as day.

Be patient and don't argue. It is the Holy Spirit that will reveal it in time (if he is to ever see this truth). Remember what Paul said to Timothy. He said “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction

In Christ,
Kenith

Tertiumquid, ...you are right about exegesis. I have much experience in the Greek and my opponent, who has also been to seminary, has no experience in the Greek. This makes it even more difficult.

Also, thanks for the encourgement Cajun!
