Question about tongues

About a month ago, after seeking tongues for a few weeks, I was filled the spirit and spoke tongues for about twenty minutes. I poured my heart with many different languages but also through crying, weeping and laughter.
Since recieving the gift of tongues I have been left with one tongue that I use to glorify God and edify myself. However, when I pray with tongues I pray by knowing what is in my heart. It's like i'm praying to the Lord knowing what I mean from what I say even though I don't exactly know what I'm saying. Is this right though? Shouldn' it be that when I pray in tongues the words spoken to God are given by God to me to glorify him even though I don't know what I am saying and what I mean. I just want to know because I don't want to use the gift of tongues wrongly.

Huh? I didn't understand your question.

I am not sure what you are saying but I'll take a guess. When you pray in tongues you are speaking mysteries by the Spirit of God who is praying through you. You can pray about things happening half a world away through the heavenly language when you pray in tongues. You are yeilding yourself to be used as a tool by the Spirit of God who is praying through you to get work done on the earth and to have the Father's will carried out.

You can also sing and praise God in tongues. Sometimes you don't know what else to say in English (or your natural language) so you begin in tongues. Either way, you are giving God glory and honor that is due to His name.

Praying in tongues is a joint procedure whereby the Spirit and you work together in praying. He supplies to manner (words) of which you speak and you supply the breath and vocal cords.

Hi Ecclesiastes,

What I was trying to say was when I pray in tongues the prayer's purpose comes from my heart. So when I pray in tongues it's not as if I don't know what I am praying, because I am praying the concern on my heart. I want to know if this is the correct way to speak in tongues because I'm not sure whether we are supposed to know what we pray about in tongues. If you still don't understand i'll try to explain again.

Sometimes when you pray int ongues you are praying out the concerns of your heart when you cannot express them in your natural tongues. You pray them out in "groanings to deep for words". Yes that is a correct "way" in which you can pray. Sometimes if there is a pressing situation and you do not know what to pray about such as a situation dealing with people on the job and things surrounding that. You can say those individual's anmes and the place where you work and then just start praying in tongues. You know what you are praying about but you don't know what you are exactly praying.

There are sometimes when you pray in tongues when God will let you interprate them. Or as I said above you can pray for certain subject matter as noted above. Either way is fine. It is God helping you when you pray.

Sometimes that happens, and basically you have the gift of interpretation of tongues, only it appears as if its internal. That would be my guess.

Yes Hobo, you are not in error. Sometimes, there's a burden on your heart for something or some situation. You can pray in English first, but soon you'll run out of English words, soon you won't know what to pray anymore or how to pray, perhaps the situation is so complex and really beyond you and your limited intelligence, so you pray in tongues! Thank God for tongues! And sometimes, as you pray in tongues and swtich back to English, somehow, you will know what/how else to pray in English for that situation.

As for interpretation, it happens differently to different people. Sometimes, we just pray in tongues without having any particular request/burden in our hearts or minds. ie we just pray becos we want to (or becos we havnt been doing so for some time).

In such times, we really do not know what we are praying. So, we ask for the interpretation, and sometimes God gives it, and we then somehow know what it is we are praying, whether just by an inward knowing or by a vision or dream.

I would say that while you may feel that you understand what you are praying for when praying in tongues that you may only understand what the surface issue is and that the Hole Spirit may be leading to pray about an underlying cause that you know nothing about. This is just a thought and not supported by scripture but it seems to make sense. It may also be that you only think you know what you are praying about and really have no idea. Praying in tongues is a wonderful experience. I hope that the spirit moves you often.

I agree with you flesh. I am certain that I don't understand the full nature of what I say when I speak in tongues. Only God does.
There are times when I have finished praying what was in my heart but the words continue to come out so I believe that the Holy Spirit continues to work in me even when I have personally finished the prayer.

I agree with all the posts so far. Hobo, you said that you go through different emotions, it's funny when that happens, because you sometimes feel like you are letting go of something where you start crying or you are overwhelmingly happy! or you really agree with what is being communicated. Even though your conscious mind doesn't know what it's about, your spirit knows. I love that!

I have another quick question, does anyone ever pray in tongues but not out loud, like it's just your spirit praying, but no audible sound? i know that sounds confusing, but does anyone do this?

It was crazy for me because my emotions changed like every 2 minutes. Sometimes I was smiling and laughing out loud, other times I was crouching in submission to the power of God, other times crying and other times just weeping. It just went back and forth within the twenty minutes. It was a rollercoaster ride.

With your question, I have sometimes spoke tongues or heard it in my head without any audible sound coming out of my mouth. Sometimes i feel it in my mouth and can speak it but no sound comes out. Maybe this is not what you mean but this sometimes happens to me.
