Hello , I just attended the church of the Nazarene today for the first time! I'm am a exadventist and I am looking for a church.

I have been reading about the beliefs of the church and I have come across the holiness belief and I was wondering where I could learn more in depth about this doctrine?
Any websites or YouTube videos mabey?

Thank you so much for all of your help.

I attended a CoN as a young man and later an Assy of God. (very similar except for the gifts of the spirit) Both were from the Holiness branch of Wesleyanism. My dad was ordained in the Wesleyan Methodist church but left the ministry before I was born. Nazarene was the closest fit for him.

I think you will find much of it the same as what Adventism holds to, with some exceptions. There is no advice against eating meat. Of course they meet on Sunday.

But the restrictions on dress, jewelry, clothing, makeup, alcohol, tobacco, cards and movies USED TO BE pretty much the same. It is my understanding that in the last several decades those restrictions have been relaxed. I am not sure by how much.

Maid Marie is our resident Nazarene. I'll let her have first chance at addressing your question. But if she doesn't I can try to direct you in some directions, like Wesley Center Online, where you can have access to holiness writers.
Thank you so much!

Hello, you must be the reason why God reminded me today that I hadn't visited WP lately and need to check in ;)

The Church of the Nazarene is a product of the Wesleyan Movement started by John Wesley [the UMC parent] and the American Holiness Movement with some other worship styles thrown in [we may come across as seeming more Baptist than Methodist in worship style]. In the past, we tended to put too much emphasis on the externals such as dress, jewelry, clothing, makeup, alcohol, tobacco, cards and movies. But now those are either eliminated [ex. dress/jewelry/makeup] or are written in a more spiritually mature way [ex. encouraged to honor God in what we watch instead of "boycott movies"]. The prohibition against alcohol and tobacco has been rewritten to include drugs and other addictive substances.

The emphasis on holiness means that we believe that God has saved us so that he can create within us disciples who are so filled with God's love for others that we are perfect for God to use. This is called Christian Perfection or "Holiness". We grow in holiness when we dedicate our lives, wills and futures to God and ask him to fill us with his Holy Spirit. The more that we are filled with the Holy Spirit and the more that sin, wrong attitudes, carnal spirit is cleansed from our lives the more that God can use us for his Kingdom.

Here are some links for you to look at besides the one that GS told you: http://www.crivoice.org/theology.html and http://www.crivoice.org/relational.html. Dr. Oord wrote a book based on relational holiness - https://www.amazon.com/Relational-H...2FGJYS?ie=UTF8&btkr=1&ref_=dp-kindle-redirect. It is a great book and written in an assessable style.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I am posting mostly to subscribe. As I've posted before, my wife is a children's minister at a non-denomination (but, theologically Baptist) church. I tend to relate more to the Wesleyan views, particularly those of the Holiness Movement. My understanding of the HM is much like those previously posted. It used to be much more external focused (a big list of dos and don'ts), but from what I am seeing more recently, the focus in on an internal change brought about by the working of the Holy Spirit, which leads to holier conduct in the way we treat people and such (not so much on looking "holier" than the world, but shunning "worldly" things).

I have seen this exact same change in other denoms that sprung from the Holiness movement as well, like the Wesleyans (my dad's denom) and the Assembly of God. (my wife's family)

IMO this is a very positive change.
