In short, I have been having terrible thoughts that I'm not going to be a successful person when I am older JUST because I am no longer doing high school sports (I only did 1 year of soccer freshman year).

I am a straight A student and mainly a 11.0 out of 11.0 GPA, I am involved in marching band (I play guitar) and Varsity singer's band (I play guitar in that too). But, no sports this year, but I still keep healthy and active.
I don't play sports anymore mainly because last year, there was a lot of prejudice and bullying going on, and the coaches didn't even know my name and all... :(
But, this year, in the bands I am in, the directors know me personally and talk to me a lot, and tell me how good I am... Anyways, back on topic...

There are some teens my age that are really good at sport and have the same grades as me, and that worries me...

I always will follow God, and I pray that I may become a man of value and be successful in what I pursue in life.

What do you guys think about this?

What is an 11.0 out of an 11.0 gpa? Usually gpa's only go to 4.0, just curious.

I'm not sure what you are worried about. Are you worried you won't be "all you can be" because you don't play sports? Do you believe that because you don't play sports, you are less than?

Obviously, God gave you a gift in music, so is that not enough? He does not gift everyone the same, and He wants you to use your music talents for Him.

Whatever you do, do for the Lord!

My school uses 11.0 sometimes, but other times 4.0 gpa, we're strange lol.

I am fearing I will be labeled a quitter, or be looked down upon by other athletes, maybe even bullied. I want to go to the USAFA (a college) that accepts prestige students, but you basically must be involved in sports as well..

I wasn't meaning it like that, I'm not asking to be the best athlete in the world or best musician (I'm not even the best musician in the school but I'm fine with that.). I just want my future to be secure and for some reason I have feelings like I'm not going to live up to what I want myself to be when I am older, maybe I'm just strange...

Thank you, for your response.

I do understand your concerns, but fear is not from God and you need to trust God that He has you exactly where you need to be.

We need to give our future to the Lord because in Him is the only place we can be secure.

We might be bullied or made fun of, etc, but it's part of being refined and growing in Christ. I do not think you are strange in the least, I think it's normal, sometimes we forget though that God is control.

peace -
Jake

Is there some sort of weird sports culture in the US that I don't know about? In the UK sports has nothing to do with success and you can get into the best Universities without sport.

Either way you will be fine.
Hi solarwave,

Unfortunately, yes, high school sports have gotten out of hand, imo, others may disagree. It's highly competitive, parents tend to push their kids into sports at very young ages, and hope they receive a scholarship, not all, but many. It's an infatuation, especially will professional sports, americans spend billions of dollars attending those games.

Back to teens though, football basically runs all year around, not the games, but the conditioning. There is an amount of prestige in being on a sports team in high school, there also tends to more of an emphasis put on sports than academia.

I hope you don't mind me saying that I find that to be rather strange.

Anyway, would I be right in thinking that when people get into the world of work it is your education level and experience rather than sports that matter?

I agree with you, mind you it's not everyone, but there is a huge focus put onto sports. Less than 1% of high school sports player actually make it professionally, but the parents are the ones who believe their child "can make it". Professional sport players in America make 1-2 million dollars a year. Our priorities are messed up.

Yes, I agree again, employers are not looking for a high school jock, they are looking at degrees, gpa's and what you did in your community. Yet, that's the thing, many kids and their parents, focus on trying to get into sports after school. I'm not saying being an athlete is a bad thing and I think being on a team builds character, but it's when you put all your eggs into one basket that it gets really unfortunate.

I agree. We do have the same thing with football (soccer) but I've never heard someone think they wont make it because they don't have a sport.

You have to have a name to play on a sport and actually enjoy it. I don't have one, therefore, none of the coaches know my name (even at the end of the season).

I agree with you guys, sports are being taken out of hand. And that statistic, Jake, on your last post, I really didn't know was true.

Thank you both for supporting me, I'll get through it.

YAY another person who wants to go to the Academy. Im just going into my senio year in high school and i want to go to the academy too, but ive only done one season of basketball. Really you dont have to be involved in sports to get in, it just helps. what you really need to focus on is 1. leadership 2. leadership and 3. grades/staying fit. Of course sports help, but if you pass your physical no ones gonna care really about how many seasons of sports you played. your grades and test scores are also important but it sounds like you're good there. My mom is a liason officer for the academy so if you have more questions i can ask her to find the liason in you area.

stick with it and stay in shape and you should do fine. :)
