I want to know anyone who has an opinion on this scripture and their interpretation. Deuteronomy 23:2 "No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of his descendents may enter the assembly of the Lord." NIV version

I wonder what it means by a "forbidden marriage?".
I know back then they had fixed marriages ect.....
Does anyone have an idea?

Maybe it has something to do with fornication or adultery. I am only guessing. I don't have a clue really. Also, it could have something to do with marrying relatives or something.Mom of 6 said:

I don't know for sure. But I would think a forbidden marriage would be with a divorced woman, or a woman who wasn't a virgin at marriage, or something like that.

If you also post this in the Messianic section of CF, perhaps someone well versed in Biblical Hebrew may be able to provide a better contextual explanation of this verse.

Since you posted in the parenting section, can I assume that you're wondering if it applies to children born out of wedlock? I think that verse did apply to Jews of the OT. When Jesus took on the sin of the world, he saved us all, including those who once had to suffer for the sin of their parents. Jesus loves us all...especially the little children.

The Jews were forbidden in the scripture at various times from marrying women of other lands and religions. This might be what the passage was referring to. Even to this day, Jews look to the mother to define inclusion. If the mother is Jewish, the children are Jewish. If the mother is not, neither are the children
