  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a question about the servant or "shemesh" candel . In the Jewish Encyclopedia it states that this center or servant candle, called the "ner Elohim" (lamp of God), is also called the "ner ha ma'arbi".

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/v...&letter=M&pid=1

I think this would be translated "lamp, the (or from the) fourth", as arba is the Hebrew word for four or fourth. (aleph/resh/bet/ayin) It is from the root Raba (resh/bet/ayin) which means foursquare, or lying down, as in down on all fours (a servant position)....but I could not confirm this translation, nor could I find the Hebrew spelling of this term........if anyone can, let me know.....thanks

This is the problem with transliteration. If it is from the word for the number four [Bra I can find no reference to that spelling. This is not to say there isn't one. What I did find in my Jastrow dictionary (if you are not familiar with it, it is for Targum, Babalonian and Jerusalem Midrashic literature with references to Tosefta) was ybr[m from the root br[ evening. If this is the right word it would make the translation something like "the lamp of the evening".
