  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Did gideon use divination through God in Judges 6:36-40?

How so?

On another note, can you elaborate on what you mean by "through God"?

On yet another note, is divination, according to the living God, an abomination?

Gideon was a Prophet, and Prophets receive instruction from G-d in different manners. This was not divination as Gideon requested that G-d give him a sign, granted a very specific sign, but a sign non the less.

Third, it is possible, though unlikely, this is one of the few cases in which God permitted the use of objects to discern His will. Other examples include the casting of lots (Leviticus 16:7-10), the priest’s use of the Urim and Thummim (Numbers 27:21), and Gideon’s use of the fleece (Judges 6:36-40). If Joseph did practice divination with the silver cup, it was not divination in the pagan sense but seeking God’s will through a particular method. I got this from this website:

What kind of divination did Joseph do in Genesis 44:5, 15?

If you notice it mentions Gideon with his fleece. So i thought it sounded right. How the person on the website explained it.What do you think?

Interestingly, I am writing a message about How do I know I'm hearing God's voice right now, and I'm using this exact scripture as a part of it.

My thoughts:
1) Clearly Gideon is unsure of himself (I am the least of the least), and by extension unsure if he is hearing God's voice. God speaks to all of us, but it is a learning process to recognize His voice.

2) Gideon asks these things and says, "then I shall know that You will save Israel by my hand, as You have said" or in other words, then I will know I am hearing clearly. This is not divination in the evil sense, this is confirmation for someone new to God's voice by using what was available.

3) Notice, there was nothing of value gained by the exchange other than the confirmation itself. [Evil] Divination is obtaining supernatural knowledge (from a source outside of God) for personal gain, not the case here.

I think asking for a fleece is a sign of immaturity, but not a bad thing as long as it is done with sincere motives as demonstrated here.

Can you list any parts of the bible were God does use divination through someone?
