Orthodox Christians normally fast from certain foods (meat, dairy, eggs, wine, & olive oil) while also trying to limit their intake. It should be stressed that fasting is a means to exercise ones spiritual muscles in abstaining from worldly passions. It is not in and of itself a means of gaining favor with our Lord.

I think Isaiah 58 has so much to say about this subject and yet I never see it used as a reference for it. I have come to the conclusion that if we follow tha mandate set forth there that we will find that true fasting is way more than we imagined it was and yet I believe it also shows us that the results of that kind of fasting are far greater than anything we could ever have imagined, as well.

I know that it works for me everytime I am able to get that sold out for God, which isn't nearly as much as I want to be. But, He's working on me.

Fasting can mean abstaining from anything you do for personal gratification. For example, if you love chocolate so much that you have some just about every day, to show God that He means more to you than chocolate, you could fast by not having ANY for a certain length of time. Fasting could include food, drinks, TV, video games, sports, cigarettes, alcohol, gambling, shopping, etc.

Remember, the point of fasting is to show God and yourself that you trust Him and that you are willing to give up for Him the most important things in your life, whatever those might be.
