• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dear 4givenme

It's one day at a time.

Generally when we take our meds right the manic is not any ways near the manic without meds.

Listen to those around you and if they tell you need to see a doctor. Do it.

After your first experiences we learn to see the warning signs. But that doesn't mean when were on a manic high we will do whats right.

I wish you well.

My mom only has episodes on days that she doesn't take her meds (and for a week after skipping a day), but she is on a very heavy dose of anti-depresants -- much more than the average.

My mom acutally occasionally skips a day just so she can have a manic episode. The rest of the week she is depressed. Her doctors, obviously, do not approve.

i think we should live on day at a time in everything. staying in the moment. however, having a plan and safety list is prudent. ask your doctor about it.

it is responsible for us to plan for a day, week, etc.. where we need ministered too. weather it be by Christ's devine attention and presence or a helping safety list of things our doctor/ counselor suggests. it's management, like a savings account ^_^

Hello 4givenme,

From the information about BP I know, correct (medical ) healing can reduce the rate of relapse much more .For example, if one does not take medicine, he has 70% rate to relapse; but if he takes correct medicine, maybe he has only 20% rate to relapse. I think your doctor can not promise sure that you will never have a manic or depression episode . And generally, even if your symptoms have disappeared , you still need take medicine for some time to consolidate the healing and prevent from relapse. More details you can ask for your mental doctor.

Sincerely, Yusuph

Dear Yusuphhai

That some time you are referring to is the rest of your life.

The ones that get in real trouble are the ones that get the idea they are cured.

So far the meds are to fend off the symptoms and not to cure bipolar.

Dear Wonderwaleye,

You are right. In my case maybe I need take medicines all my life. I have the experience about relapse of mania more than three times; although most of time I fell into depression. But correct cure in time can increase the possibility of complete recovery (or control the state of illness more easily). Maybe one doesn’t need to take medicines everyday all one’s life like me. As you said, the meds are to fend off the symptoms and not to cure bipolar.

Lord Bless you for your Kindness,
love,Yusuph:hug:

I was recently diagnosed and I have a question for thosw who have had this dissorder for a while, If I stay on my meds will I never have a manic episode again???
" Never say never" Unfourtunatly, We are coming and going at all times, Yes, meds will help but not for your entire life. Make sure your med works well, pray always and let the doc know as soon as you feel different and you can be in control. That's a great thing GOD gave us. The power to be in control. It seems so easy to say but, hard to do. But, we can!
GOD BLESS!!

The thing with bipolar disorder is that meds you definitely need to stay on but anything can trigger an episode and so like me you may have to be readjusted at times like with maybe change of seasons which really affect us. I hope you have a strong support system and I am always here if you need to PM me.
God loves you so he is helping you with getting those medications and also I am so glad you came here because we are all here to help each other in this.....LOVE YOU sis

Everything in here is so true, IF we take our meds regularly and without fail, Our chance of relapse is dramaticlly reduced.
After almost 12 years on meds, I can count the times I have been thru a manic phase on one hand.
The opposite is true however for depressed phases.
I lost count a long time ago.
In all things, We do need to listen to our Dr's and keep taking our meds even if we feel better.
Hang in there 4givenme and we are all here to help.

I have received some good advise and I try to keep it in the forefront of my mind always.

1. Learn the warning signs of mania coming. Ask someone close to look for specific signs that a manic or depressed episode is coming and give them permission to intervene to call the doctor to call in a prescription or whatever. it's not as likely to find yourself in a full blown manic episode if you take your meds everyday but i've been known to forget or skip and then I'm in big trouble and have to ride it out.

1. Make your Bipolar your friend. Ask your bipolar what it needs and give it what it needs. When you are feeling confused, hesitant, unable to make a decision, anxious.. check with your bipolar first before doing anything. Ask it if it can handle a certain situation. This is hard when you're manic but before hand.
