  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello everyone!
I don't know whether this is the best forum for my question, so if it's not I'll understand if it gets moved.

I transfered a ton (256 Mb) of family photos from my Canon's memory card to my PC today. Unfortunately, when I then deleted the card's contents, I also erased the folder and .txt file that are always there.
Now neither the camera nor my PC will recognize the memory card.

I am guessing that the card may, at this point, need to be reformatted or something, but I'm just guessing here.

Can anyone offer advice to help resolve this problem?
Thanks!

Humm... not sure what to do about that now... most of the time though, if you make a mistake like that you can just press ctrl+z for "undo" and get it back immediately.

You man wanna ask around at other active photography forums.

[edit] I corrected my mistake.. it is ctrl+z.... ctrl+y is redo.

Even if you reformat your card and it works in your camera, your pc should have a file somewhere like in "my pictures". Hope it works!

Try reformatting it. I thought I had pooched a card once when I switched off power during a transfer (well, technically, the battery in the camera died). I had to reformat the card, then it worked again.

That's what I first tried to do, but the camera refuses to even power up with this card in it... :(

Can I somehow format the card via my PC?

(I'm still looking for the manual...)

Power the camera up first, then insert the card, and try reformatting. Cards are not dependent on any software that was intalled on them to operate, but sometimes they have image recovery software installed (I've always deleted that stuff off the card). Your camera creates a folder on the card to identify what image type and format will be saved in the folder. It may be wise to read your camera instruction manual to see if there is a special sequence necessary to reformat the card.

Also, try visiting the card manufacturer's website to see if there are any downloadable software fixes or upgrades in place. Some have forums you can check out.

There's always the chance that a card will fail as well. What type do you have (CF, Xd, Sony memory stick) and who is the manufacturer? Definitely check the manufacturer's website and call tech support.

Somehow, this seems to have done the trick.
I powered up the camera with a different memory card in it, then removed that card. As soon as the card compartment was opened, the camera shut down.
I put the problematic card in and shut the door. The camera powered up and I took some pics. No reformatting necessary; the camera seems to have created new folders by itself.

Thanks again to all who resonded!!
