• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

My parents foster children and have recently took in a child with autism. He's there temporarily, but in the meantime, this is the first child they've had with autism. It's hard for momma to get anything done for he's not a big fan of noise, (unless he's the one making it).
EX: He won't let anyone run the vacuum cleaner and will hold his ears and say "NO!" But, he will put a bell to his ear and ring it repeatedly. Or he will bang two things together and put his ear as close as he can to listen.
He is also terrified of dogs and my parents have two inside dogs. If a dog comes running or walking toward him he screams and runs and he won't stop til the dog is gone.
My question is: Is this common, or is it like anything else, and it just depends on the child?
He also has a habit of going into the bathroom and unexpectedly walks into a room with no clothes on. Not only is that an uncomfortable thing for my parents and the other foster children, but visitors as well. (Although, my parents are teaching him that he can't just take his clothes off at any given time)
My parents, as well as the social workers, no nothing about his background. Except that he and his mother were living in a condemned building and she refused to go to a motel with paid expenses and refused to get him treatment.
I'm sorry for being a little long-winded, but I thought I would try and see if I can get some information that may help my parents out. Momma is exhausted for he's always keeping her on her toes and she can't let him out of her sight and get anything done.

One thing I do know is my foster brother is a real handful! He's really sweet though. He calls my momma "Momma Bird" LOL And everytime he says someone's name it's Miss So-and-So or Mr. Whoever. And he loves to sing. He'll sing songs that even I don't know. And they're word for word and note for note. :)

Autism is not the same thing as Aspergers. Autism is like a web.... and Aspergers is a branch of that web. I happen to have Aspergers-Autism. :)

Anyways, in answer to angelkiss, I believe it depends on the individual. A good way to learn about autism is to go to the Autism Society of Minnesota website. If you want the url link, send me a PM. I can't give it out here as it violates CF rules.

Blessings,
Quentin

You will see the difference if you ever meet someone with full-blown "classical" autism. I once knew a woman about my age with typical autism. She could not speak, but kind of grunted if she was upset. She walked around looking at the ground and would not make eye contact with anyone. She lived with her parents and they cared for her (she couldn't do it herself).

My 2 sons have Aspergers; some authorities consider Aspergers to be very similar to high-functioning autism, but others consider them to be fundamentally different, and only to resemble each other.

its different is it? I was told it was near enough the same..

Its complicated. It is the same, yet it's different. Look at a tree. It has branches right? Well Aspergers is a branch of Autism. Its still Autism, but has different characteristics.

Hope I helped clear up somethings,
Quentin

I'm a little saddened that my foster brother left today for a facility that can best meet his needs. Momma said had they been able to give him ALL their attention, they would have been able to keep him. Considering they have 3 other children in their home, it was hard to keep up with him.
He had made progress in the time he was at my parents'. Momma was telling me today, that he took off her sock one day and put it on his foot, so she walked around in one sock and he walked around in one sock. ^_^ I love the fact that he was well-loved while he was with them. I think he's surely gonna leave an imprint in our hearts.
Afore he left, I kept telling him bye, in which case, he was totally ignoring me, so I thought I'd try and get his attention in a different way. As he was walking to the truck, I yelled out "MOMMA BIRD!" Bless his heart, he turned around and said "Momma Bird!" That was the best goodbye I could've hoped for. :)

Thanks to all for your help. We now know more bout it so, if they get another child with the same thing, we'll be a little more educated.
