In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i know this has been out a while and it got some bad reviews but i wanna know what its like from people who have played it.

is it worth me getting it? ive played quake 1 only, fan of classic doom and half life.

(doom 3 is a little pants for me i think ID ruined it! - i played a sample on someone elses computer - cant play half life 2 as my own comp does not have internet access!).

it says i need a £D accelerator card, im not sure if i have one but what type do i get if i dont?

I enjoyed it.
The graphics are quality. The gameplay is simple and its unashamed that there is no real depth to the storyline.

It's throughly enjoyable if you just want to shoot some stuff and enjoy quality graphics but if you are not keen on gore or you want a game that you'll play forever then its probably not for you.
If you liked Quake you'll probably like this.

I think that play.com are doing the basic edition really cheap right now (£13) so i reckon its worth it for that much money. Wouldn't pay much more than £20 for the game alone though.
I got the edition with Quake 2 because I hadn't played it in years and I wanted to re-live a part of my early teenage years!

You will definately need a decent graphics card to run this game. I play it with a Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb and it runs like a dream on that. I think you can pick up a Radeon 9800 for about £70 nowadays. That should sort you out for a few years though.

I enjoyed it. It was a graphically updated old school shooter, and for a game that's not a survival horror, it was a lot more disturbing than Doom 3. I'd get it, but this isn't a game you'll be playing more than 2-3 times.

I can think of one set piece that could be called more disturbing than Doom 3 (you know what I'm talking about if you played it ;) *cough*Medical Facility*cough*).
Doom 3 is by a long way more scary than Quake 4. I can play Quake 4 without having to pause the game every time a baddie starts coming after me. I found Half Life 2 more scary than Quake 4 because there are little creatures that jump at your face which you dont get with Quake 4.

my computer is less than a yr old - customised.

256mb Radeon 9800 (i think) graphics card

hmmm...tempting..

You should have no problem playing it then. It's good to have a game which, apart from the PC, is only available on a next-gen conolse!

Just to sum up. It's fun to play on for a few weeks but it definately is not a classic you'll want to play through many times - ala Half Life 2.

I agree, you shouldn't have too many problems running it. Save your money and wait a year or two to upgrade, when you'll need to.

What do you mean by this? Do you insist on big pants?

Someone described Doom 3 to me as gaming Vegemite: Either you love it or hate it. I agree-I hated it after a couple hours, but some people love it.

Stupid flashlight issue!

I was VERY disappointed in Doom 3 and Quake 4. Doom lost its scare factor an hour in when you equate "red mist/ammo = enemy behind you" Quake was like Doom 3 only differant. Basically, its a differant game, but if you have played Doom 3, it almost feels like an expansion pack.

Its like playing city of heroes then switching to city of villains.

Oh, and I almost forgot! I don't think you NEED internet for half-life 2. You might, but I think you can play the single player version alone. Check that out, its a million times better than quake 4. Actually, look at F.E.A.R too, another good FPS.

Well, I do hope you enjoy it if you are getting it, I am often wrong! :D

I have the game for the Xbox 360, and I say it's pretty good. I think PDZ is a better FPS for the 360 in terms of multiplayer content, but Quake 4 gets the job done, just with a bit of a sour aftertaste.

The problem is that Quake 4 can be very cookie cutter at times. In meaning that it follows the same dynamic that it, and many FPSs before it, have. It has the addition of marine teammates that will heal you and repair your armor, and even on occasion give you upgrades to your weapons, but other than that it's all the same formula. Which is not too bad. You wont be disappointed if you dont' put your hopes high, and you'll get a fun experience.

I would get the special edition one so you can play Quake 2 if you beat, or just get bored of, Quake 4. :)

Quake is a big game with big guns. It has a very Rambo approach to problems.

No complicated puzzles or complex strategy involved. The main problem is shooting enough bullets at whatever twitches before they can do it to you. Again, not very intellectually stimulating but a definate adrenaline rush.

If you prefer a little more brains in your games, I'd go with Tribes
