Q about Tele Conversion Lens

Say my current camera has 12x optical zoom, and if I add a 1.7x tele lens, does that mean it's a total of about 20.4x zoom (optical)?

This is all excluding digital zoom. I don't like digital zoom.

That would make your total zoom um... 20.4x total optical zoom, though you are like to lose a small amount of quality in the image taken.

If I remember the appature changes a bit as well, but not certain about that with digital...

I believe tele converter lenses knock the aperature down a half to a full stop. It should tell you in the manual. It means you'll have to adjust the iris to compensate for the loss of light with the converter on.

In 35mm terms, 12x is 432mm times 1.7 is about 732mm. 600mm is considered about the minimum for wildlife photography. A lens of that power for a DSLR is $5,000 and up.
