  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Happy thread-splitting!

I don't really have a career to give up at the moment, but my self-indulgent dream job would be one of those "expert guides" on cruise ships that give free lectures to the guests in exotic locations. Just sounds like a lot of fun, to me. Teaching, traveling, not too much stress.

Why were the dying words of John Adams somewhat ironic?

Didn't they have something to do with Thomas Jefferson living on or something, and Jefferson died on the same day? I could be wrong...hold on, I'm going to research this, lol.

In the meantime...a question for the person below me...why is history important to learn, in your opinion? (Or if it isn't, why do you think that?)

Yes, I got it right...also coincidentally, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4th, the 50 year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (a few years later, President Monroe would also die on July 4).

I can't say it better than did Aldous Huxley:
"That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach."

Do you feel that it is important to practice at least some of the fine arts- art, music, drama, etc- later in life?

I don't have kids.... but I teach 'em. ;)
So to adjust your question to fit me - I teach both kids (grades 1-4) and teenagers (high school) here in Japan - I think teaching teens is harder for several reasons (they are much more hesitant to speak English than the little kids are, sometimes they aren't motivated to study or do their work, I have to prepare much more for teaching them & making tests & marking papers, one of the teens in my class is getting into "trouble" outside of school, etc etc etc)..... BUT... I really love my high schoolers, their individual personalities. :)
Not to say I don't love the little kids, too, cuz I do.... But since my main responsibility is High School Homeroom Teacher (we've got 21 kids in high school at our school so they're all in one class), God's given me a heart for them.

Phew that was a lot... ;)

If you were a teacher, which grade level or subject would you want to teach?
