Better Moscow than Brussels, why?

Do I need to explain to you? So many people standing between the two understand. It's not Moscow that's trying to force European borders open to millions of people from God knows what parts of the world, never mind the effect on the economy, never mind the consequences for public safety.

"Governments such as those in Hungary and Greece "openly sympathize" with Putin.

Ask the Hungarians and the Greeks. For that matter, talk to 52 percent of your own countrymen.

Learned your lesson? Are you saying that the US should not have got involved in WW2?

Of course. What else would I be saying?

The main point, though, is that America and Russia are friends and allies now...

Okay, so that asides, what cultural values does Western Europe and the US have in common with Russia?

Leaving the EU doesn't mean we want to be dominated culturally by Moscow.

That's acceptable? You'd watch as Europe and Asia became dominated by Germany, Italy and Japan?

Ahum. You have no idea what you're talking about. Yeah, the refugees are a crisis and a problem. Nobody's denying that. But, that's not the whole story:

Brussels is not the one buying houses undercover in the country for it's special troops in preparation for an invasion. Moscow is.

Brussels is not the one sending submarines and military planes to constantly violate our territory in an attempt to intimidate and spy on us. Moscow is.

Brussels is not the one constantly increasing the strengths of their army units right next to our border. Moscow is.

Brussels is not the one pressuring us what to do in our foreign policy. Moscow is.

Brussels is not the one talking about a war and how we will be targeted by a nuclear strike if we make wrong foreign policy choices. Moscow is.

Living next door to Russia, I know full well who are my enemies and who are the friends.

But what do you think Russia's motivations are, and if your country left the EU, do you think there would still be a threat to your country from Russia?

I believe Russias motivations are to control it's neighbours, that's what it's been doing for decades. Only exception being the Yeltsin era when it easened up a bit. With Putin it's the same as it was with the Soviet Union, showing off with military and threatening us to influence our politics all day long. It's almost a daily routine here and the same story in other Russian European neighbours.

If we left EU, most likely they would thank us and then continue. If you try to be friends with Russia, you can only move to one direction, to do as they say more and more. You become more under their control and you can't make move to the other direction or they will try to force you, maybe invade. That's what happened to Ukraine (and in the past Hungary and Czechoslovakia).

Also, please note that the EU is not a military alliance, more like a trade union. Finland is not a Nato country and there are no any other country's troops in Finland, except Finnish. So there is no Nato, or any other western threat to Russia from Finland. And yet Russia keeps massing it's troops on the border etc. So what they are doing is rather aggressive in nature.

Eh?

I believe I'm being somewhat rational and collected here while our huge neighbour is massing troops on the border, but you American Trumpists seem to be terribly afraid and paranoid about refugees that are in Europe, half a world away from where you live.

I'm worried about you people's nerves, for real

I would be decidedly fearful, living where you do. And I'm wondering about the whole of eastern Europe.

I'm actually more worried about my countrymen being overly confident, honestly, our war history is kind of a problem in that regard. We fought the Red Army twice and got away with it (Winter war and Continuation War) and most everyone here believes we can do it again, no help needed.

I personally have a little bit more pessimistic expectations about that than average guys here do, and I think it would perhaps be the time to rethink that "Let's just go Simo Häyhä again if they come" approach...

Is there a correlation between caffeine and paranoia?

I'm concerned first and foremost about our southern border, but I brought up an issue more pertinent to your side of the pond. It's really much the same issue, just different parts of the world.

I understand the protests against Trump, but we need to look at the bigger picture. The head of the snake is 5,000 miles away, in Moscow. He has a plan to divide Europe and weaken the United States, and he is winning. Brexit, Trump, and then Marine Le Pen and Frauke Petry. Right wing nationalism in the West will weaken historic alliances that would protect the Baltics from the Russians.

Trump was vulnerable after his 2004 bankruptcy and he depended on investment from Russian oligarchs connected to Putin. He is Putin's man. We now have a puppet President-Elect who is going to allow Putin to invade Eastern Europe. I don't want to hear one word about patriotism from Republicans after this. The America I know defended Europe in two world wars, not because we had to, but because it was the right thing to do.
