Uh, well, the short version is that I was once the victim of sexually threatening anonymous emails from someone who was clearly watching me on a daily basis and knew personal details about my life. It was scary, and it makes things like posting my pic or giving out my real name a huge deal for me -- in fact, I've considered editing those pics out, but I'm trying not to be overly cautious. So for now, you folks get to see my face, and I get to feel good from all the nice compliments I've recieved.



ETA: Oh, and I should say that I've been close to a few other women who have had stalkers of one kind or another. I once had a problem with a man in a class that I taught, and once an ex-boyfriend got a little overzealous... I wouldn't call those last two stalking, per se, but they have contributed to my inclination for privacy. I'm not a scaredy cat or anything, but I'm aware that safety is a concern, especially on the internet.

You know, it's amazing how many people have been victimized by poop like this. There are a lot of pervs out there.

You know, after they caught my stalker, the police wouldn't even let me press charges against him. They said it had to do with the unregulated internet and the absence of an applicable law. There was more to it than that, but still... it was frustrating.

Yeah, there have been a lot of laws passed in the last few years regarding such things, but many of them are poorly worded. It protects some of the people one would like to prosecute, and endangers some of the people one wouldn't. Very frustrating.
