  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is a bit embarrassing, but I have a new fear about the pushing part of pregnancy. Someone told me the other day that the pushing part is just like pushing out a poop. But here's the problem... I'm one of those people who have a problem pushing out a poop  . I'm not constipated at all, but it just takes me a while and I need something to read. Now I don't want to be asking my dh for the Glamour magazine while I'm dilated and ready to go, but is it truly just like that? And if anyone else was in the same boat, was it really difficult to push? I'm just really nervous I won't be able to push her out of me in March if it really is like going number 2. Help please.

Yes and no. When pushing, you do want to push like you're going poop, only with a lot more effort...that's the most effective. Other than that, it really depends on your body and how the baby is positioned. It took me a while with my son as his head was trying to come out crooked, but I have friends that pushed theirs out in just a few pushes. All I can say, is focus more on pushing and less on any pain you might have. I was fortunate to have a really good epidural and didn't feel much pain at all. Also try to stay relaxed and focused as that really helps your contractions be more productive. Keeping yourself in shape also helps...ask your doctor what kind of excercise regimine you should be doing. Most of all, don't get yourself worked up before hand! I prayed about my second pregnancy to have peace that everything would go well and God provided that peace for me.

Your body know what it has to do, and the urge to push is something that can not be ignored.
It is related to passing a motion, because the sensations are similar, while at the same time completely different. Your stomach muscles and uterus will be contracting, and your job is to help them do their work.
The peristalic (sp) movement of the intestines and bowel, is a completely different thing to muscles contracting.
Don't worry about it, everything will go just as it should.

I'm in the same boat as you as far as bm's are concerned and I had no problem pushing my daughter out (well, my first -but my second was hard only because she was face up). I pushed for 15 minutes -maybe 3-4 times, and out she came! :D It's similar because you are pushing the same areas, but it's not the same because it's not the same um... you know... exit. ;)

Oh, and a little off-topic, but I was told that pushing with a groan or scream does more than if you hold your breath... I did it with both my girls. I think holding your breath could cause someone to pass out! LOL
That's really good to know. Thank you all for your comments, I guess I'm just getting the normal jitters a couple months before the big day. I've been pretty lucky as far as keeping in shape and not gaining a whole lot of weight. I know I'll do ok as long as God is with me. I'll be praying the whole entire time, believe me you!

Something that really got me through was praising God for strong contractions. I know it's hard, but I just kept saying to myself "Maximum effectiveness, minimum side effects". The stronger the contractions, the more preparation for that sweet baby to come and the sooner in most cases. Remember to trust God, rely on Him to speak to you, and eat nice and healthy. Have you heard of Red Raspberry Leaf tea? It is great for so many things but especially for toning your uterus for labor and causing more effective contractions. Don't know what you know and I wanted to share! I'm so excited!

LOL I wish I felt bold like that this time. I'm going to tell myself the same thing now :D

One thing about the poo... Believe me, every single healthcare giver (whether doctor, nurse, midwife, doula) has seen it all and it's Not A Big Deal.

Birthing a baby is messy. That's just part of life! We're so used to a super clean disinfected society that we tend to freak when we think about bodily functions being on display. But you know what? When the time comes, you won't care At All. I have told doula clients in the past, They could wheel you through the mall Stark naked and you wouldn't care or notice. You just want that baby out. ;) lol

I actually heard a different thing about the groaning. Not holding your breath, but instead of focusing your energy on the vocalising trying to focus that energy into pushing - made a big difference for me!
And you can take your time pushing too, it took me nearly 2 hrs (felt very quick though) to push out my daughter and around 45mins for my son - and I had no stitches!

Also, I was also praising God for each contraction with my son, I was just so thankful to be FINALLY going into labour!

I was told the same thing for delivering mine (focusing your energy into pushing rather than vocalizing). And it definitely seemed to be more effective for me.

Oh I never heard that Leisamd. I do have to add that I didn't have tearing with either of my babes. We did perineum massage.

Was it mentioned that during labor you might poo? As embarrassing as it is... it's quite common! ;)
yup, they mentioned it. And (TMI) it happened. But yeah, no one cared! And I didn't notice. I didn't do any massage. I didn't do anything except pray a lot, and I am so thankful to have never had any stitches...

I was told that one way to push was to put your chin to your chest and breath out as you push, it uses the muscles in your belly rather than your bowel!

I held my breath last time and it was really horrible, not going to do that this time!!
