• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yeah, I do it all the time. I used to think that it was just pure masochism, but now I think that maybe there is some therapeutic value to it. Feeling the sadness which certain music brings up, helps me deal with the sadness from my past.

It helps let the sadness out, which feels good; because it feels good, it's more likely to be reinforced, so you naturally find yourself wanting to be sad more. Classic negative reinforcement: removal of a negative stimulus causes whatever behavior that resulted in the removal of this negative stimulus to be reinforced.

Does anyone else purposely make themselves sad? I will listen to a bunch of sad music and i know it will make me hurt but i do it anyways.
Is that common with anyone else here...?

Yes I used to do it sometimes, but some music is really bad and makes you feel worse. At one point I was just sick of continually pretending I was happy and let it out with music from Randy Newman. That was really healing to get honest. Miss you, LOL a song he wrote for his exwife he divorced a long time ago and losing you and after I let it out and let God heal me it got a lot better. I think you get depressed when you continually push your feelings away.
