  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When I read the book, I enjoyed it and found it to be a practical way to examine your walk with Christ -- looking back I feel it was too practical. Everything is just laid out for you. The book covers 5 areas of Christian life. These 5 areas became like a checklist to judge whether or not I'm doing okay in my walk with Christ. Our church read the book together. Since that time, I have seen our church turn from being focused on Christ to being focused on the 5 purposes.

After you read the book you have a way to evaluate your life and find the direction for your life without seeking God. I feel that this book may hamper some people's relationship with Christ by taking necessary dependance and communication out of the picture.

This is a good book. I would recommend it to those who probably have no religion or who are newbies, so to speak. I thought the book was overall good. I even had index cards and a notebook for the book. But I do have a friend whose aunt says that Rick seems to change around stuff (in so many words) and his point of view in the book is different from what the Bible says.

Seems like Prayer Warrior did his homework, for real. Thanks for the tips, Prayer Warrior.

Also I want to briefly mention Chapter 38 (World-Class Christians) from what I read, he says to the audience that they should be all missionaries. He talks about short-term missions around the world.

Is that true? Is it a sin if you don't become a missionary?

With all that said, I still do recommend it.

My daughter and I both read it and love it and plan to read it twice yearly just to re-fire us up,if needed. I loved some of the suggestions such as having our own journal where we write all the ways God has blessed us and others we know and answered prayers, because what better resource to have at our fingertips when we find ourselves in the valley again than our own journal with our own personal victories, plus I see it as a personal tribute to God. The book also got me back into Gospel tract ministry.

I will say that as soon as my daughter told me that he recommends that you just read 1 chapter a day for 30 days,my immediate thought was "smart marketing PLOY,that way he insures that you HAVE to purchase his book as opposed to checking it out from the library, plus the fact that he tells you to mark it up,write in it ect.

However,I am cautious about getting any further involved with Rick Warren, the author,as I have read on another forum, terrible things about churches that follow his blueprint in another of his books"The Purpose Driven Church". How these churches become dead and many, many testimonies of those who left because they hated what their church had become! Pastors no longer preaching, just playing videos of Rick Warren sermons ect! Sounds exactly like Herbert Armstrong's World Wide Church Of God,cult that I went to once, years ago, after getting involved from reading their free magazine that used to be everywhere. Thank the Lord, our church has not gotten involved as a church body.

if i remember correctly that chapter was a bit lacking. What about being a missionary to the poor and the non-christians in your own home town. There are almost no area in the world that does not have people who need JESUS!

My wife and I read the book before we were married. For my wife and I, the Holy Spirit used the book to get us both on the right path. We were living together in a life of sin and made some major changes because of it. We did not finish the book, however, but I don't believe we need to. Not saying that there isn't room for growth, there is plenty of room for that! :)

Great book for starters and to get you going on the right track. We read this book and any questions or clearification we needed, we went to our pastor. The combination was soul saving!

God Bless!

Recommend, absolutely!

Hi! I have to say that my Husband and I were skeptical when we first came across the book...but we joined a study group that was reading and using it for their weekly meeting. We were pretty impressed with the material, so I guess I would recommend it. What I do have to tell you is that it is NOT replacement for scriptures (which I'm sure you know...it was just good to be reminded of it)...it is just an aid. If you look at it from that perspective it's a little easier to digest...remember no one or thing is perfect! But anything that tries to bring Glory to God with good intentions is OK in my book!

I dont like the idea behind it. The guy seems like a know-it-all
guess you haven't heard many protestant sermons or read many protestant pastors books. The author of Purpose Driven life thinks (and i agree with him) that he has discovered a way to apply the Bible to our life that will help us grow in CHRIST. So he simply presents it as truth. It is a style that is a bit foreign to Catholics as our leaders always must submit to an authority above them and they almost always have authority over someone below them ~ this teaches them humility.

note i am not saying Protestant pastors are not humble or all have a know-it-all attitude i am just saying that we have different expectations and different types of leaders

that's understood and it's very kind of you to say so.:)

where the difference might come in is that Protestant pastors would not have to have their books or writings approved by those over them so long as there is nothing that would contradict the teachings of their church. Certainly a supervising pastor or bishop would be interested, but they would not have a "yea or nay" on the matter. Protestant pastors are free to write their own sermons, but in most cases the management of their churches is overseen by a superior pastor or bishop, and in many cases is done via denomination rules and regulations.

There are people who need Jesus Christ in each of our home towns, so unless specifically led by the Holy Spirit, I'd recommend looking for missionary opportunities in your home town.

Nah. As much as I enjoy travel, I don't enjoy the idea or being a missionary.
