You might also want to check out some books by Edmund Morgan--a student of Perry Miller's (who first resurrected the Puritans as a valid scholarly topic in the 1930s with his two-volume set, The Puritan Mind)--and, in my view, one of America's finest historians. A few in particular come to mind--

Reading about the Puritans, particularly in Perry Miller's magisterial works, during my first stint in graduate school opened up my mind to the validity of Christianity, and I will always thank God for it.
