Last year was my first year celebrating. The kids had a great time. The only problem was that I made the hat shaped "cookies", which is what I called them because I couldn't (and can't) remember the real name. I presented them as "cookies" to my children and they very much weren't. This year I'll have to come up with better food.

We do "Haman's Ears" and I fill them with strawberry jam (instead of the traditional fillings) because I knew my kids wouldn't like them any other way. They are a huge hit and we Only make them at Purim. :)

Do you have a sweeter recipe? Mine is not very good. I used jelly too, but they tasted like baked flour with jelly.

Here's mine:
Hamantaschen
Honey Dough:
4 C flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
4 eggs
1 cup honey
1/4 pound butter, melted

I won't bore you with the rest of the details, unless someone wants it, because like I said, they weren't very good. I made the dough and added jelly.

And dont forget to write Haman's name on the bottom of your shoes as its time we stomped his name out all over the world:amen:

Another fun thing to do is have a Haman looking pinata filled with candy and small toys, we use to do this in my old shul, and let the kiddies take turns hitting the pinata at the end of the Purim party

My recipe uses orange juice, orange rind and sugar ( I'm going to experiment with stevia and make sugar free hamantashen. I fill them with apricot and blueberry sugar free jam.
Usually we do a Purim shpiel but this year we are going to do a readers theater Megillah.
The kids dress up and we encourage the adults to do the same. We get some fun costumes.
Everyone loves using groggers so it can get quite loud and boisterous.

Ani, you might want to try agave nectar instead of the stevia. :) - you'll have to compensate for the extra wetness but it will likely work better.

Kris10leigh, you might want to check this link.

I haven't made Hamantaschen (Haman's pockets is what it translates to in German) since I went gluten free, it's a hard recipe for me due to my hands and patience - so I was going to try and expirament later this week with a couple recipes someone sent me.

I'm waiting on my dough to rest then will make my hamantashen this afternoon. They will be for mishloach manot. Our shul is doing a fundraiser for our kids to go to Camp Gilgal this summer so some of us are making the cookies to be purchased to put in the baskets.

I'm trying to get creative with ours. We have some friends that can use some help but she's become restricted off of veggies (90% or more) due to her son's colic -- and that kinda puts me at a bind on how to help out on our weekly dinners together, let alone a basket of food.

I have a hamantashen question. I changed my sugar recipe and used Sweetleaf stevia instead. Didn't get the memo of using agave until after I had made the dough. It changed the structure of the dough though and no matter what technique I use the cookies unfold in baking. They taste great but as far as looking like hamantashen - no ceeeegaarrss.
Anyone to the rescue?

Yeah that's what I was afraid of with the stevia. What kind of texture did the dough have when you were making it? ultra wet? dry? Sometimes that can tell you where to go with it.

I know with gluten free cooking, it is über tricky to get some cookies/shortbreads and breads to successfully convert, which is why I am delaying even trying them.. I need someone to handle the baby so I can handle it if it flops. :D

The first batch of dough came out really dry. After that I tried to tweek it by adding another egg and more orange juice. Still a little dry but workable. Guess I still need to tweek. Problem is I have two lumps of dough in the [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]. I need to make into cookies and these were suppose to be for a fundraiser. I don't mind giving my flops to my fam and friends with a disclaimer of "imagine you are eating really perfect hamantashen" but the people buying the cookies want the real deal for their buck.;)

Tonight at havurah I whined about my sad hamantashen. My Rabbitzin and I came up with a solution. If after all my efforts do not create the masterpieces I need we will call them tashenflops or tashenflopim and sell them for more because they are special.
The stress is off!!

The day before, I'm just now getting around to checking out the website you suggested! So much for planning ahead!

It's a helpful one, thank you.
