If someone killed themself do they go to heaven, hell or are they in purgatory for the rest of there enternal life? My boyfriend back in 1997 shot and killed himself for a stupid reason what so ever and I was just wondering that if he would be stuck in purgatory for a while that little place here between heaven and hell. Would anyone know the answer to my question at all.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

However, one doesn't go to purgatory forever... that is only for souls entering Heaven.

We don't what happened to your boyfriend only God knows. Hell and purgatory are both possibilities. However, if he went to purgatory then he is saved, he just needs to be cleansed before he can enter heaven.

I understand your concern 
It is a dreadful thing to lose a loved one to such a terrible death..but we must Trust in our Merciful God..no one can know who will or will not go to Purgatory/Heaven..only God knows...and i know it's hard to 'trust' when we may need an 'absolute'....but Trust we must...and don't forget to pray for your boyfriends soul everday in your prayers ! No one can measure the 'time' (not that time as we know it will exist) span of purgatory...we might never know the workings of our prayer in this life, but we may just do so in the next..and won't it be a time of rejoicing if we 'get in' and see our loved ones there..ones who suffered so greatly in this earhtly life

The way I understand is that we can't judge whether or not someone is in hell however we can say what causes someone to go there. If your boyfriend was completely rational when he did this and he knew that what he was about to do was wrong when he did it and he had lost all trust in God then when he did it chances are he is in hell but no one but God can judge if that was the situation or not so we can't say only God truly knows. If I'm wrong here someone please tell me. As for Purgatory it isn't permanent only those who are going to heaven go there and if there a soul there it will go to heaven so because you don't know I'd say pray for this person.
