  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

:p Sorry--I don't kno anyone who pays. If i did, I'd use 'em myself--I've had about 8 poems published, but only in 'vollunteer' publisher places who don't pay anything and don't really give you any publicity. Keep looking tho, I'm sure oyu'll find someone!

I can tell you how to do it in the U.S. -- I imagine it's not too much different in Europe. When I was looking for an agent myself, I found a lot of references to agents in the U.K., and it seemed to be the same basic process.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with your work -- are you a poet? Because if you're just talking about publishing a few small pieces, it's not really worth it to get an agent. They often don't bother with the sale of short pieces, anyway, but if they do, their percentage will eat up whatever small compensation you might receive. Agents usually come into play when you have a book-length work to sell, like a novel or a collection of short stories or poetry.

But let me know if you'd like further advice; I'll be happy to provide it!

As stated above, it really depends on what you are trying to get published, if you need an agent at all.

In the States alot of people use a book called "Writer's Market" for finding many publishing resources. It has listing of publishers and agents and much more. It lists International Publishers as well, so see if your local library might have a copy.

Since it's all about business, and even more so with agents, you need to show them you're marketable--give them ideas of who will buy your work, where you will promote it. Maybe even tie the poetry in with songwriting.

An easier path to get started, especially for poetry--look into Lulu.com, an incredibly reasonable print-on-demand company. They're in the U.S., but many internationals also use them and pay extra postage.

Back to songwriting, if you own a guitar--our town has a "songwriter's roundtable" where a couple times a month, a few select songwriters present their work (sagas, silly songs, thought-provokers) in a coffeehouse, help back up each other in accompaniment, and joke around with the audience. They don't consider themselves big musicians, but they're incredible writers.

Every year this book comes out updated with current publisher information: Christian Writers' Market Guide by Sally E. Stuart. It gives resources for publishing works written in many different genres. It is soft cover and is available at Amazon.com. The 2004 book cost $24.99 and has over 600 pages. Take care and God bless.

try the free resources online first, they can narrow it down for you in regards to who is legit and who isn't- I don't know if you have them in European libraries but you can check out past books, or read from the reference section, the latest edition of Writer's Market, which included an International section within its pages.
Older books of WM you can take home (at least over here) and then you can always select the lists you want and check to see if they're still around either online, or in the latest edition.

There is also writersdigest.com -- the online magazine edition, and then there is

poetry.com -- you can try to get some of your work published that way and that website also narrows the search down to poets instead of writer's in general.

as for an agent...I had a writing instructor whose short story was turned into a movie, he told me (in regards to novels, at least) not to even bother with an agent, BUT if a Publisher accepted my work first - find a good agent I wanted and then to call them - not write, to have them negotiate the deal.
Nowadays its harder to get a publisher to look at unagented submissions but there are a few out there. (thank God!)

Writer's Digest online also has a sublink somewhere for agents that are reputable and warnings for those who have raised a few eyebrows.
