  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think I understand what your asking...and if I do understand correctly my answer would be to pray. Ask God to show you, and to increase your faith. The more you know about the Catholic Church, the more you realize that she has to be the Chuch that Jesus founded. Everything points to that fact. The more you experience the graces that you can recieve and the more you are able to live the Catholic Faith, you will be convinced that it is very spiritual. So, be patient. God will show you.
Your sister in Christ,
Erin

Actually after the Reformation the need for psychology increased.

Psyco-therapy replaced confession but with out the absolution, we were then made to think that our sins were okay and all we had to do we be okay with ourselves.

G.K. Chesterson wrote something about this effect that the reformation had on the need for moderen psychology.

I'd have to disagree with that. Most psychology isn't concerned with legitimate guilt; it's concerned with various mental illnesses, ranging from inappropriate guilt, to depression, etcetera.

Someone who has a chemical imbalance resulting in serious depression isn't in need of absolution, but of treatment for a physical illness.

In my honest opinion, I am skeptical of the determination of there being "chemical imbalances". In theory I am okay with it. But.... what are the symptoms (there must be physical manifestations of physical imbalances, don't you think?) and what are the ways in which these imbalances are singled out and restructured ?

Besides which, a brain dysfunction is or is not the same as a psychological/spiritual dysfunction?

But to know/hear one is forgiven by God can do wonders.

How do I know that it is of spiritual, and not just psychological, benefit?

I believe God gave us reason to guide us, but it can only take you so far. Catholicism, to me, makes the most logical sense, which is why, I believe, it makes good psychological sense. BUT, it leaves open the deep questions that I don't think you can have answers to. It is those questions that allow us to reflect deeper upon God's ways and grow in our faith. Questioning God to find answers is a fruitful journey when you ask them faithfully, and not doubtfully. I guess the only way to analyze the spiritual benefits of the Catholic faith for you would be to look inside yourself and see how much you have grown from the few spiritual exercises of hers you have embraced.

God bless you, bro,

Neal
