No, it plays UMDs (Universal Media Disk). THe graphics are as good...if not better then the PS2s.
They aren't as good as PS2. They fall somewhere between PS1 and PS2.
Go to www.gamespot.com or something similar and watch some of the gameplay videos, or read the specs. They aren't as good as PS2.

So should I get this or one of those thin PS2s?
If you don't already have a PS2, then get a new PS2. Why would anyone want a handheld instead of a console system?

PS2:
-better graphics
-hundreds of more games, thousands if you count the PSX games that you can play on it.
-you can actually watch the game on a large screen.
-the battery won't run out.
-the discs hold way more.
-PS2 games will be more complete games, since portable games are generally toned down.
-you can play games with your friends easily and cheaply.
-no little screen to get scratched and/or break.

PSP:
-it's portable

Well, that's my analysis. Unless you don't have access to a TV that you can use fairly often, or you travel a lot(considering that you're probably in high school, you most likely spend most days around home instead of being out of town), you'll be way happier with a PS2.

Lando, where do you get your money from?

I have seen the graphics in person and I personally think they look better then any PS2 games I have played. Especially Ridge Racer.
I bet it's the small screen! You can't see the inperfections in the game with them.

Have you ever played a Gameboy or a GBA on a TV? Have you noticed how it doesn't look as good on the TV as it does on the portable system?

Have you ever played a system on a big screen TV? I'm talking 50 inches or more. You can really see the flaws in the graphics. A PS2 game looks better on a 27" TV than on a 51". You have to sit futher back from the TV for the game to look right. Not that it isn't awesome to play video games on a huge screen!

Yeah Sony did it again they do this a lot they didn't ship near enough units only 200,000 thats not that many plus quiet a few people have tried to import them. my advice is just wait for the US version while their game are supposed to be region free (meaning you can play american games on the japanese system) some movies might not be and it may affect some of the online games

The screen is very high quality (Sharp Aquos LCD screen) and the resolution really helps. GBA graphics arent good anyways lol, but, not Ive never played it on a TV. And, I do play all my games on a 53' Hitachi HDTV. Picture is great and graphics look really good. I did not get my system for $505 now, it will be $554. I think thats well worth it though.

I got mine here in Japan the day it was released, and am pretty pleased with it. The base unit sells for about 20 000 yen (around US$200, I think), and the games go for around 5000 yen. One neat feature is the USB port, which allows you to hook it up to your computer and download photos, movie clips or music to the PSP's Memory Stick. (you need a newer version of Windows to do this however...Windows 98 isn't supported) The screen is also backlit, so unlike GBA, it's quite easy to see.

50 dollars for a handheld game? That's a little much.

By the way, how are the graphics? Is it nice?

After looking at both systems I definalty favor the DS more sure it might not have as good of graphics but I think it's the games that count and there is just nothing of intrest to me on the PSP I also think there is much more Innovation behind the DS while the PSP does exactly what it's name suggest it's bassacally a portable playstation 2 there is no game you could make for one that you couldn't make for the other with the DS it's touchscreen and stuff make it so the games can be very unique.

Yeah, $50 bucks for a PSP disc isn't cheap, but it's not so bad when you consider that the normal price for GBA games in Japan is 4800 yen, pretty much the same price as PSP games.

As an earlier poster said, the quality of the graphics falls somewhere in between that of the PS1 and PS2, and since the games are disc based, the sound is great.

It comes packaged with a rechargeable battery pack and charger, which is good because battery life is obviously much less than other handhelds. The instruction book says one charge will last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, but I haven't used it enough yet to verify that.

All in all, it's a good way to kill some time when you're on a long train trip or somewhere away from home.

Man, too bad I couldnt get you to pick one up for me, lol would have helped spending only 200 for a base pack. Oh well, I feel my $500 is money well spent. So many possiblities with the USB port... My 1 gig memorystick will come in handy for movies and music too =)

This is all about generating more demand so they can push the product down everyone's throats. See PS2 shortage in the US.
