Psalms 46:2 says "Therefore will we not fear,though the earth be removed,and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea."Wow thanks for this thread! I look forward to more Psalms.![]()
I know that I have. But now I am beginning to wonder - do I really cry out like this for His name's sake or mine?Help us (me), God our Savior,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us (me) and forgive our (my) sins
for your names sake.
Thank you again! I cannot wait for Psalm 119, my favorite!![]()
Revenge is a meal,.......best served COLD.Psalm 83
A song. A psalm of Asaph.
1 O God, do not remain silent;
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
2 See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
3 With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
4 Come, they say, let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israels name is remembered no more.
5 With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you
6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab and the Hagrites,
7 Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
8 Even Assyria has joined them
to reinforce Lots descendants.
9 Do to them as you did to Midian,
as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
10 who perished at Endor
and became like dung on the ground.
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,
all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 who said, Let us take possession
of the pasturelands of God.
13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
like chaff before the wind.
14 As fire consumes the forest
or a flame sets the mountains ablaze,
15 so pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your storm.
16 Cover their faces with shame, LORD,
so that they will seek your name.
17 May they ever be ashamed and dismayed;
may they perish in disgrace.
18 Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD
that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
Enemies
We all have them. People who just don't wnat the best for you. People who ignore you. People who got out of their way to make your life harder. People who will be rude and slanderous to your face and sometimes, to the people that are important to us. Imagine if all the people you ever would have classified as an enemy, even on a minor scale, got togethter and decided to make your life a misery. That is what happened to Israel. And you would want revenge too right?
Revenge is not always a good thing. Revenge is self-seeking and requires us to put our needs before the needs of others including God. We enable others to dictate who we think and feel, and then follow along in a game of cat and mouse. In the end there will always be a winner but there may not be a victory.
The psalmist here realised that, although they wanted the Lord to exact revenge for Isreal's mistreatment, there should only be one purpose - for the Lord's name to be praised by all. He wanted God's revenge to turn his enemies towards the Lord so that they would know of Him. The psalmist wanted the Lord's name to be praised. So before we start praying for our enemies to be vanquished we need to ask ourselves - is this for me or is it for the Lord?
Wonderful, thanks....
But the journey through this life is what brings us closer to God and in turn brings us closer to His dwelling place. We were not called to this life to simply settle into it. This is a pilgrimmage of the heart. It is a pilgrimmage to a place of wisdom, love, joy, peace, happiness, contentment and self-control. It is a pilgrimmage of strength and discovery in the Lord so that when we finally come into His presence we can say confidently "here I am Lord. I am Yours."
