My son just bought a PS2 silver and likes it because he can still play the older games on it, actually the little brothers like that more becasue they have favorite games they play.
I never buy the newest version of any game system, camera, stereo, etc etc... there are always problems with the new versions and they cost waayyy too much. The second or third versions are always better and cheaper.
Besides with the cost of that one PS3 machine i could pay for all of our christmas!!! That $600+ could buy me a big Christmas dinner and gifts for each of my kids... and still be able to give some to charity.
