Ps 82

Psa 82:1 God presides in the heavenly council; in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:

Psa 82:6 'You are gods,' I said; 'all of you are children of the Most High.'

Why didn't this ancient Mesopotamian polytheism get edited out?

Any ideas?

Polytheism persisted among the Israelites since God is repeatedly condemning them for reverting to it long after the Exodus. The point is to show that God is supreme and there is no other & the passage in 82:6 is to explain that we were made in His image & the Psalm is a plea for justice to see His image in all humans & care for them. We are not to worship gods but to strive to do God's will so he will give us everlasting life & not die in vain.
