  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been looking at Proverbs recently, and was struck by how applicable many of them are for people like myself who write on electronic bulletin boards such as Christian Forums.

You see, the book has a lot to say about foolishness and wisdom, about speaking and keeping silent, about being harsh and being gentle.

Here are a couple of verses I came across, maybe other people can think of some more:

"Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent." (17:27-28)

"A fool takes no pleasure in understanding,
but only in expressing his opinion." (18:2)

"A soft answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
but the mouths of fools pour out folly." (15:1-2)

Let's soak up more of this divine wisdom...

Hi again, StAnselm,

Amen :amen: to your post.

I would post more about this, but:

"When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent." (Proverbs 10:19, ESV)

I'd just like to make it clear that any post mentioning any particular group counts as trolling. Anyone who even looks like they're using this topic as a springboard to make hits on other groups/members will be booked.

And Proverbs isn't just good for everyone on CF, it's good for everyone in general. ;) (And I gladly include myself in that "everyone" group.)
