CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

In many regions spanking children is not only discouraged but may even land in jail. Even in my own town a pastor was arrested for spanking his child. Yet such is one of the forms of disciplines the Bible recommends.

Pr 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.

Pr 22:15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Pr 23:13,14 Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell.

Pr 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

Pr 19:18 Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.

Pr 20:30 Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.

More generally concerning discipline:

Heb 12:10,11 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

So if you're concerned about any negative affects of disciplining your children, consider the negative affects of not disciplining them.

I firmly believe in whopping for bad behavior. However, it needs to be done as a result of bad behavior, and with the intention of correcting that bad behavior, not because the parent is frustrated, and angry.

Additionally, you should only spank them on the buttocks, or swat their hands.

I knew a person, that in addition to the above, would bite there child when they not someone, and would spit on them when they exhibited that behavior as well. Both of these are a bit much IMHO.

No switches, cords, hangers, hot wheel tracks, or, wooden spoons.

Spanking on the butt has it's place, but I know parents that did not administer corporal punishment, and raised fine kids.

within reason, it should be the choice of the parents.

Not that I am adverse to a smack on the bottom when needed, but this is also in the Old Testament: If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his home town. And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear of it and fear. Duet 21:18-21

Hi bcb,
I'm against any form of violence against children including sexual, corporal and mental abuse.
Many families already operate without violence showing it is possible. Why should Christian children be the ones who can't be brought up without violence.
Yet Proverbs recommend violence indeed.
My approach to reconcile this: Proverbs frankly state that this book is about wisdom.
Whereas God stays the same through the ages... wisdom might change.
Today you have parental counseling, why not opt for this instead of using violence?

There are many people today with a lot of foolishness still inside of them.

Note that God's Directions Clearly show how to deal with that WHILE THEY ARE YOUNG!

It is practically impossible when they are older (over ten or twelve years old) if it is not consistently accomplished, with all truth, gentleness, compassion and mercy,
the way God describes.

After they are twenty years old, with all their foolishness still intact, if so,

they are not useful nor reliable in any position as they lack self-control and integrity.

(with few if any exceptions)

Thus, train up a child in the way he should go (don't neglect consistent training, Godly Righteous Character Building from conception throughout life) ....
and he will not depart far from it when he is old.
